85 Euro re-build thread
I thought I would start a thread to document the re-building of the new-to-me 1985 Euro 928 that has a 928 Specialists prototype 16v supercharger on it.
But first I need to thank a lot of people. When this car came up for sale, I got about 4 or 5 phone calls from my brethren talking about the possibilities of this car. Bobby, Tom, Tim, Hacker, Dennis, Dave, Eric, Hans, and few more. We all saw the potential this car had, but there were some serious unknowns.
I had been toying with the idea of making a track car with my son and daughter. The idea is we only work on it together and when it's "done" we take it to DE and other track-related events as a family. We will see how long this lasts, but I think I have two very interested helpers. I want to pass along a little of what I have learned from the 928 and my special group of friends and let them enjoy some of that too.
The car was sold by Dave Roberts (owner of 928 Specialists) to Ed MD a few years ago. Ed set the car up to run the Texas Mile. He changed out the suspension, added a roll bar, harnesses, and a few other odds and ends. I'm not sure what his results were from the Texas mile, but he spent quite a bit getting the car ready for it.
Then as I understand it, Ed's daughter was heading off to (med?) school and he wanted some cash to help pay for it. He sold the car to Iwanna928 (Stephen) about a year or so ago. Things get a bit fuzzy here, but as Stephen described it to me, he drove the car for about 3 weeks and then while pushing it, something blew and there was a cloud of smoke and the car hasn't run right since.
He trailered it to DR's so DR could evaluate it and fix it. I'm not sure what happened, but fast forward to this past July/August, and Stephen was ready to take his losses and move on.
The topic came up during Sharks in Hell and we started talking about the feasibility of getting the car up to me because it was not drive-able. Hand mentioned we was going down to DR's at some point and could possibly bring the car up to Indy. Then Mark H. our host in Hell offered his truck and trailer for me to use. So the stars were aligning. Now I just needed to close the deal.
I made and offer and we quickly reached a number that worked for both sides. Bobby ran over and closed the deal for me the next day! Now that is a friend! Thanks Bobby! I owe you huge!
Then Hans picked up the car for me and brought it up to Rod Underwood's (home of Sharks in Nowhere). So a huge thanks to Hans and Rod! I owe you guys!
Then, yesterday I borrowed Mark's rig and went down and picked it up from Rod with my kids along for the journey.
I will use this thread to document the rehabbing of this car. My son has already signed up here on RL and will make his debut post someday soon. in the meantime, here are pics of how the car sits today. Not bad. Just needs to be gone through. Might need a motor, but don't know yet. It kind of runs, but it's VERY lean and needs to be shark tuned.
More to follow in the days/weeks/months/years(?) ahead.
Start of the drive...
Kids asked if the trailer would hold their weight! Cute!
Sitting on Rod's trailer.
Loaded up and ready to go!
Man that guy is really on my ***! That freaked me out for quite a while!
Customary mirror photo... with a twist.
Home!
I always liked that banner!
Here's the engine as I got it.
Not sure what these guys are, but we will find out soon enough.
The interior. I like it a lot!

Great start to an excellent journey!
As you know AO, this car has a special place in my heart. I've drooled on it many times, and DR set the goal for how I wanted my old '84 Euro to be. Sadly I've moved on from it, but the new owner has taken it to a new level and continues to do so. I'm sure you will do the same for DR.
Will be following this project closely. Let me know how I may help.

Subscribed- I'll be interested to hear what's really going on with that motor, I hope it's just a tuning issue!

Excellent Andrew, you are the right person to get this car running again :-) Even better if it a family project... I would strongly advise fitting a JE Vampire knock control system to it.

This looks like fun Andrew, good luck with this project. At first I thought you were using the skinny lens on the camera, wow you sure slimmed down!
Here's hoping for a bad head gasket and a nice stout block!

Congrats on a NICE car....
Honestly I don't think it will be that much of a project.....sure you gotta pull the engine and tear it down, hopefully it just needs new rings and there isn't serious scoring in the cylinder walls....if so its a pretty easy repair....One thing I would do is NOT use Porsche rings again...... John Kuhn told me that the factory 16V rings were "fragile" when ran under boost and he thought other rings would work better....he liked Total Seal rings....same as Carl uses in his motors

Yes, the rings are an issue. Fine for stock, but not so much for boost. Thanks for the lead. Will look into it.
