I'm going to have to pull out my collection of Kukla, Fran and Ollie, Howdy Doody and Woodie Woodpecker.

I've got a couple used sets, thought about the rebuild, its fairly cheap around $70 each and shipping IIRC, but they have no warranty vs new are lifetime.

Only two ways to test the shocks; put them on a car, or use a shock dyno. Bilstein will check a shock for around $20 plus shipping, again iirc.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but factory shocks and retail purchase may have different repair terms.

now Roger has let Jack out of the box we'll resume regular programming:

shocks make a great difference on the 928 and there is a thread by Bill Ball who did exstensive trial and error research with his car.....search here if you can

I have bilsteins (from Roger) and stock springs on my 87 S4 - and they're a very good combo. Nice and firm but still compliant, and infinitely better than 26 year old stock springs with no damping.

I'm still undecided which setup I prefer - I have Koni/EIbach on my '89, and Bilstein/Stock on my '87, as all 3 sets of wheels I have are different diameter (16,17,18), so to make a fair comparison I'll need to swap wheels around to eliminate differences due to side wall.

I thought I'd experienced them all until I put on the Koni's (medium setting) and found some of the heavier springs from a GTS (sport package). Simply amazing is all I can really say. I will not change to anything else and I've had a variation of shocks and springs on my car.

Go to a hardware store and buy a wrench for your kitchen sink. They are used to tighten the big nut on a disposal. With a little piece of pipe and an extension, they work just fine.

I can't believe I waited so long to do this.

I can go full throttle in 1st and 2nd, even power out of a corner, now!

Was not a bad job...using the air tools and two post lift at my friend's shop.

Fronts may go on later this week.

Ken,

Those look a bit sad!

I have Bilsteins on the rear and Koni internally adjustable on the front [set to medium] to dampen the Eibach springs. The Bilsteins were a legacy item from my S4, and wanted to try the Koni's up front.

Seems to work well for general motoring, I think I would go for the max setting on the Koni's if I get to track it. at all.

Regards

Fred

Is there a writeup on how to replace the front shocks?

I gave up after I dented the fender.
(Not to worry, I'm set to replace both fenders because of previous crash repairs which were poorly done.)

The front Boges seem to work OK, so I'm not in a hurry. Just would have been nice to have all Bilstein.

I think the right rear shock was damaged when the car evidently went off-roading at some point.
The underside is dented up here and there, and the right resonator is crunched.

It's just easier to take off the front lower arms all the way.
