Quick pic after buff.

Looks so much better, other than the front fender is orange and door back is red. At least it has some shine to it now.

Congrats, you are on to an ambitious project! Let's hope your wife doesn't keep asking you "when are you going to be finished working on that car?"

Seriously, vast resources here on Rennlist and great support from fellow owners, so take full advantage and welcome aboard!

She was happy that it ran and that the motor was not in a box, but disappointed no road trip to pick it up. She did notice all the $$$ of the corvette parts I have been selling off lately

Not sure what you used to buff the car. Guards Red is a single stage paint and in my experience ( 2 guards red Porsche cars) it does turn orange, but its easier to restore without the need for body shop. Just requires to take the top layer off carefully. Not sure where you are located, if you are in my neck of the woods I would be happy to help you. Otherwise let me know if you need more info on how to do this.

From the look of that buffing bonnet he may have gotten the top layer! I think it looks great Mark ! My Dad bought a Jetta one time that'd turned pink then he immediately put it in the shop and layed into it with a cleaning polish and a buffer and miraculously it went from pink to shiny solo cup red ! The girl he bought it from (a friend of my brothers) came by the house 3 days later to drop off the title and refused to believe he hadn't painted the car and I think she got a little upset when he told her he already had the car running because all that was wrong with it was a bad Ignition switch and in 72 hours had already gone from a "heap" to fully functional and looking better than when it was new !

From door back it buffed out really well I was shocked. The front bumper is a complete different color somehow. I may try to wet sand some. The bad part is the bumper has some spider cracking and and one door has a mishap on the edge. Some 3m heavy oxidation remover I had. If I didn't have to fix the door, I might try just painting the front bumper.

The original paint used during the 80s is remarkably durable and comes back to life with a heavy buff as you found. The bumper is probably a respray, and with the spider cracks, will need another respray, so you'll be able to get it to match the rest of the car. The bumpers require flex agent in the paint.

Hi Mark

As you can see, I have a red GT too! Welcome to the club! It's a much better color for car than I ever would have expected until I ended up with one!

I'm just wondering if you want to change the body on an 89GT. Lord knows maybe someday collectible status?
