Default Shark Nose Cover...

At Saturday meet here in DFW saw another 928 with a plastic piece covering the top of the radiator, few quesitons and short drive later and one of the other members took me to his shop and gave me a couple sheets of the same plastic! Played around with it this weekend.

First pic is first rev, fits perfect just the holes for the headlight mechanism and overflow tube for radiator not so pretty.

Attachment 1366986

Second rev below is out of aluminum; much easier to work with. Still have to cutholes for bump stops, hood latch and headlight mechanism arm. As I replaced the vertical nipple for the radiator over flow with a L shapd brass unite from Lowes shouldnt have to cut for it. The aluminum one looks MUCH, MUCH better in person... Going to try and finish up before OCIC...

As an FYI, drove around for a bit on Sunday with the plastice one installed, just shy of 100 degrees here and noticed zero increase in water temp, though not measured other than eyeball on the gauge, looked to be about 1 tick cooler than normal of late in similar temps.

Whoah..nice. Really nice in plastic for sure.

Its probly just me..but if it had some body to it..not just a flat sheet..it would be significantly cool.

Clarify by what you mean by "body to it..."

The aluminum one looks much better in person though when done will get it powdercoated black. Due it being thinner it is able to go all the way forward to the lip of the front fascia whereas the plastic is too thick. Plus the aluminum is much more easy to form and such.

Was thinking when get powder coated to use some P O R S C H E stickers I have, put them on, have it powder coated black (most likely a wrinkle coat) then remove the lettering to show the aluminum underneatn.

Is this just for aesthetics? I agree that it looks nice, but functionally it would be much better if there was a path for cool air to the intakes. There's a lot of heat from the radiator and A/C condenser that finds it way to the intakes especially when stopped.

Cheers,

Ok..the..shadow under the plastic cover..at first glance to me here, made it look like a three dimensional piece that sits in there...where the edges roll down to sit on the area below, not just over it.

But..either way..if it fit all the way forward and had the additional tweaks to fit where it needs to properly...very nice.

Also..what about a lip that fits up over the lip of the hood opening, and sits/rests where that rain drip weather stripping sits? That would help clean it up..and blend into the area a lot more.

Hell, once its complete, Id buy one either way.

Be a really wide piece of aluminum without support, to not rattle Im afraid..but I could be wrong..youre the one with the test pieces.

Aesthetics mostly for now Jim. Looked at addressing items you speak of regarding cooler air and simply couldnt find an easy or efficient way to direct air from the grill to them. Would require hoses from the intakes atop the radiator all the way to the grill opening and havent been able to find suitable way to do that...

Still has some work to go, hopefully will be done by OCIC.

As far as rattling/noise, not an issue due to it is very form fitting and snug and the underside has a couple pieces of aluminum angles the width of it to stiffen up the middle poriton

Dont stop...duhhh?? *kidding*

But..ya..I can see some rectangular ramps that 'wedge' from the front to the rear of that piece that are a channel for cool air to the openings separated FROM the radiator area, than pulling air from within that area, as a cool aesthetic effect.

But Jim..its not like the car will starve of air even with that..but those intake holes get air from in front of the radiator..and would continue to do so with this cover...right?

Just..I can see a lot of interesting ways to form this..which..would be a kick *** vacuum form for Feather to mass produce. I would lean towards thick black plastic myself anyhow. Black..textured some, tight round edges where there's dimensional changes in it...

Jim: Im in seattle, sorry we wont connect before you head out to Kansas I think.

Didn't PorKen have something like this on his OB? For some reason I remember it helped direct air flow differently to the intake and reduce turbulence under the hood or something like that. What do I know..........as I get older I remember all kinds of strange **** that may not have happened.

Hmmm.. the wedge idea might work; basically have two "levels", the visible one and another below it with it starting from the top of the radiator and curving down all the way to the intake openings... Is that what you man?

Porken had a droopy piece of neoprene that covered the top of the radiator and the upper oil cooler. He said it worked, and I don't doubt his word, but IMHO I thought it didn't look as good as it could. Soooo, I built mine out of fiberglass. Herman built one out of plastic (very different than Kenney's) and those two are what Kenny saw at breakfast.

finally!:

Yours cleans up the front area considerably and looks nice! Jim M's addresses the other issue. It also looks nicely done. You could combine the two.

I agree Jim M should have his mass-produced (plastic molded by Jerry Feather?). I'd buy one in a second. Roger - you need to stock these!
