Just been trailered home.
Dash lights up, that's it. Not a peep, not a crank, nothing.
Fiddled with fuses and relays, nothing.
Break down chap thinks some kind of immobiliser kicked in.
I know its had at least 4 in its life, but I didn't know if any still active.
10.30pm here, will call garage in morning.
Very sad :-(

The lack of cranking sounds like immobiliser.

Its possible the alarm is still active - if so, try locking and then unlocking the car from each of the outside locks. Try starting it after each lock/unlock - if no go, try at the door lock.

The central locking isn't related to the alarm switch on the lock barrel, so it may still appear to be working but isn't, and sometimes the contacts on the alarm part of the lock corrode and won't register an unlock to disable the alarm.

My (ex-UK) '89 has an amusing tendency to get the aftermarket (laserline 90's model) alarm and the factory alarm out of sync if I make the mistake of using the lock button on the dashboard.. which leaves it immobilised in locked and unlocked states Battery disconnect fixes the sync issue.

We disconnected the battery last night-no effect.
Wouldn't start today-dang situation after 14 hrs, then ZiON (o/h) was pressing relays, pressed the one for the head lights, ask of a sudden, electrical hum and the car would start as per!
Its currently with a specialist mechanic whose first investigation is going to be checking ask the connections and checking for crossed wires I the fuse/relay board as its s lot looser than it should be.. Hope its that simple! All of the immobilisers were *meant* to have been removed... We shall see. Bloody intermittent faults!

Landsharklady : I would suggest (If you haven't done this already) reading through the FAQ's and servicing the grounds and the CE (central Electrical).

Most of the grounds can be serviced from outside the car.

The CE panel is a bit tougher to deal with. I would suggest removing it from the car completely as all of the wiring for the car (most anyway) traverses the CE you can have corrosion or other causes of electrical faults, that until they are dealt with will make your car act possessed .

There are a few write-ups but they all involve -
Disconnecting the battery
Removing the grounds (one by one) from the various ground locations [Brass wire brush to make junctions shiny] and reattaching the ground wire with a electrical compound like De-oxit or Stabil.
-Deeper work requires removing the CE from the car, and removing the fuses and relays. After removing the fuses and relays cleaning the relays (and inspecting the relays for damage) and replacing the 'suspicious' ones, and cleaning the CE panel will tend to resolve a lot of mysterious electrical issues.

Good luck; The loose wires can be fixed by carefully adjusting the terminals (cleaning and slight squeeze to help them clamp more tightly).

Thanks dcrasta-we've been wanting to clean the grounds and generally do what we can to tidy up and maintain the electrics- but we're in england and it had been raining non bloody stop for the last 3 months! Our garage is too small for the shark, one day, it will stop raining though. I hope. Can't imagine it not being grey and wet out now! Olympics are ruined, in pretty sure of that too!

I've had fine sand paper and electrical maintenance spray sat by the front door for 3 months waiting for a dry day!

Have not read all the pages but....I suggest looking at replacing the ignition switch. The last time mine went bad it had the exact same symptoms.

Hellooooo

Car is back- naturally, it behaved like an angel while at the garage!
They feel the problem is due to muck and corrosion somewhere on the fuseboard- although can't pin point it exactly, they mucked around with it and tried to recreate the problem, tidied bits up, that may well have done the trick. The electric hum from the board is reduced by about 90% now- that can ONLY be a good thing!
I've got 120 assorted fuses, contact cleaner and sandpaper ready and waiting. How's this for timing- while the car was in the shop (and we were off across the uk being in a b-movie!) it was dry and sunny. Today, car comes back, it's drizzling.
I'm hoping it will clear up in a day or so.

The car is also going in for the following in the next couple of weeks:
Horn replacement
ABS repair
cranks shaft/tension plate check
cam belts, rollers and water pump replaced
rest of fuel pipe replaced.

I was hoping you could point me in the direction of a good place to get a water pump. As we don't have many 928's in the uk, i think it pushes our parts prices right up. Thinking i could get a better pump cheaper/same price if i imported it.

Parts wise, www.928sRus.com. Contact Roger as he has that weird accent that I'm sure you also possess.
