New to 928!
Hello all 
We've recently bought a 1989 5 litre v8 monster- I LOVE it!
We weren't actually planning in a 928, we'd had an 89' 944 for about 4 years, and before that, a 944 turbo and a very early 944, so we were actually looking at s2's.. but then we saw this baby and we couldn't resist!
So, i've been reading this forum a lot to inform myself about 928's, and i figured it's about time i joined, introduced myself and what i thought, keep a kind of diary/running report of our new toy. I'm learning a lot fast about 928's, but it's all still new to me.
this forum has been invaluable so far, and now i've joined, i suspect it will be a brilliant resource.
So, the car.. 1989 5 litre s4. Originally blue, now yellow- and it really suits it!
It has a lot of history, but there is a big section where the history is missing, during that time it was resprayed, and i believe she has a new engine, as the number on the v5 and the number on the owner's care book (the orginal, but sadly no owners manual) are different. Chassis is all good.
Very well cared for, but, of course, being 23 years old, not perfect. Goes like stink!!
Interior just wants a little tidying, mainly bits of trim have come lose or not been replaced properly.
Sunroof doesn't work- want some advise on that, will get to that later.
Horn doesn't work- blows fuses after one or two parps.
Backup lights don't work, believe the switch at the gear box is at fault here, but as it's not an MOT issue, i'm not too concerned about that.
The ATF lines were very corroded when we got her- they were the original ones, so 23 years old, can't complain. Fuel and brake lines fine.
Had new ATF lines put on, leak stopped.
Sent the car to a godawful auto-electrician, he had it for 10 days! was only meant to be 3.. when we got the car back, the back up lights still didn't work, the horn worked for 2 days, and the car had an intermittent start problem! Electrician, conveniently on holiday..
Start problem occurred twice, when key was turned, dash would light up, but that was is. No attempt by starter motor or anything else.
first time was by a busy road, it started after an hour- just when the breakdown truck arrived- d'oh!
second time was in a quiet area, where we were able to hear a clicking coming from the fuse/relay box. Further investigation lead us to suspect the starter relay, as thats where the clicking seemed to come from- and someone had drawn a big red cross on it too- which made us suspicious! tapped and made sure firmly in place and voila!
So new starter relay ordered and installed, and so far, no problems, but it's only been a week, i don't like to presume it was def that, but it is looking likely.
Wit regards to the sunroof i mentioned earlier, i'm not too fussed about it not working, my problem is it leaks! I suspect the drains are blocked, but i can't get the roof open manually to clear them.
I was considering a thin bit of neoprene tape on the inside edge of where the sunroof sits, but i don't know if that would do any good- it worked on the 944, but i was able to take the roof out, unblock the drains and fit the neoprene snugly into where the old seals had compressed over the years.
Any thoughts?
And today, the car has developed a new, small leak. It;s coming from a small pipe just infront of the drivers side (rhd car) rear wheel. I suspect a small bit of atf pipe which wasn't replaced as it runs alongside another bit of pipe the same shape/size which i'm guessing is the send/return for the atf?
The bit with the leak seems rather lose, the twin to it has a rubber support holding it relatively still, the leaky pipe does not, and as the existing support looks pretty tired, i'm wondering if the support for the leaky pipe deteriorated completely, meaning this section of pipe has been getting a lot of movement and has either come lose or has gotten damaged??
Am going to clean it up and investigate for lose bolts/seals/obvious damage in a bit, i shall get some pictures.
Car is having an immobilizer fitted next monday at a very reputable garage which did a lot of work on our previous cars, if i can't fix this leak myself i'll ask them to take a look at it.
I have very little knowledge other than what i've pick up from this forum and other research, and even fewer tools, but i do seem to have practical mind when it comes to these cars!

Brutus, I will go look that up now- and it had a thorough checkup by a porsche specialist garage before we bought it, belts and crankshaft etc were all checked over and deemed "good".
The engine (assuming i'm correct in thinking it's been replaced) was done at least 5 years ago, and the owner then was very much a no-expense spared sorta person judging by the overall condition of the car, they seem to have known what they were doing and would have been aware of the dangers of the crank shaft end play- even i was before i got into 928's.
The atf lines were coated with some kind of rust treatment rather than replaced though, guess at the time the fuel and brake lines were replaced, the atf lines weren't bad enough to warrant replacing, so were treated instead.

Welcome to the group, they are going to want pictures very soon, lots of pictures. From drips to dramatic.
With a 928 its a very good idea to travel however much is needed to find someone expert in the 928 and have them give it a good looking over. ***Porsche*** specialist does not mean they have a clue about the 928, look for a shop with a handful of 928's, 928 workshop manuals, then ask them a few trick questions like which end has the motor.
