Default 944/951 VS 928

HI Guys (&gals?)
I'm new to the forum; I've lurked here a few times, but still don’t know my whole way around yet....

I just became a member today mainly to view the pictures and classifieds.

I am currently Active Duty Navy and I will be separating in May and coming back stateside. (Currently living in Naples, Italy)

I am looking for a 944 or 928 for when I get back and I'd like your opinions on the subject of 944 vs. 928 driving experience. My dad had an 85.5 944 for 13 years and recently sold it (I was pissed, he didn’t even ask me). I am a driving enthusiast and the overall driving experience is what I am after. I'll have $10k in my pocket and for that $$ I am looking at 951's and 928s... Unfortunately no 928's with a manual. I owned a '94 Subaru SVX while I was in CA, which are only automatics, and I missed my Prelude's 5 speed. But I found I could still enjoy the car pretty thoroughly when I’d turn in to an off-ramp and stomp on the gas through the apex to open up that wonderfully torquey 3.0l flat 6. So, long story short, I think I might be just as happy with a 928 slushbox V-8 as a 951 or 944.

I'll have a long highway commute to school everyday and no matter how much I would love to get into Autocross and racing, I'll probably just use the Bike for that...

Your opinions matter! Especially if you have owned both.

From what you say... go 951. For $10k you can get a really nice example and it'll be a more sporty driving experience.

A 928 is a heavier car with more power and torque so matches the straight-line performance. In corners it's the 944 series with the handling edge. You can do all kinds of power and suspension mods to make each car better. That discussion is never-ending.

Whatever you do, make sure you get a Turbo, if you go 944.

Never owned a 951, but I'd like to one day. I will say that the 928 was designed to make that long commute to school. Speeding down a highway is where these cars really shine. The steering is perfect, the handling feels like you're on rails, and passing is effortless.

I just made a 145 mile trip down and back on the Parkway to run an errand. It felt like I was gone 10 minutes.

One thing to think about is the length of your commute. The 928 is much more comfortable for a longer drive. The 944 feels spunkier and is more economical around town.

Thing is, "bolt on" power adders for a 928 are usually more expensive than 951/944 equivalents.

I posted this same topic in the 944 section. I truly seems that this discusion is never ending! Thanks for your relpies and advice! I think its time for me to just comit to one car and buy it. Either way, each car has a specific charecter and both are enjoyable. Anything will be better than my hoptie civic I've been driving here (Naples, Italy) for the last 3 years. Wish I had a 928 while i was here, the speed limit isnt enforced at all, its pretty much like being on the Autobahn.

Drive both and then make a decision.

I've owned both, and much prefer the 928.

I owned a 924S for several years...sold it for a 928 and have two more 928S since.

Look, you're riding Buells in the land of Ducatti and Aprilla...a 16V OB, preferably Euro, might be just the ticket for you. Like any other car or bike it won't suck the headlights out of every other thing on the road, but you can pick your potency. Your fuel bill will likely reflect your choice and how much you enjoy it.
