TOTALLY agree with Bertrand on this one! Half of that stuff will not need to be done...do some of it if you want, but you won't HAVE TO do most of them. I'd wrap the car for 1/2 the paint cost and just have fun with that for awhile... You'd be in like Flinn!

With about 11k, you would have a very nice and good car.
I would start with this and see after.

If the body condition is any indicator, I’m guessing it will probably need the stuff below too. That alone is $18.4 and does not include labor. If the title doesn’t pan out and you don’t want to keep it for your own enjoyment, I’d be on it like Vince with a slap-chop.

Interior = $2K - Yes
Paint = $6K - Yes
Shocks/springs = $1K - You can keep those for while for sure.
Brakes/rotors = $1K - You can keep those too.
Tires and alignment = $1K - Yes
Rims = $1K - Why?
Rubber seals (door, window scrapers) = $1K - Maybe.
TB/WP = $800 - Yes.
Radiator (probably) $700 - Possibly not
Exhaust = $2K - Why?
PS hoses = $500 - Maybe
Belly pans = $400 - If you want
Radiator hoses, fuel lines, etc = $500 - Yes
Dump all fluids (and hope the PSD isn’t rusted) = $300 - Yes
MM/OPG = $200 - Yes

Plugs, rotors, plug wires, bad sensors, broke seat switches, inop window switches, etc., etc., etc.,

Definitely restore it. BTW, $6k for a good paint job is a great price, as long as you trust the guy doing it.

Can you do all the mechanical?

The guy who would do the paint job a serious body man. He has painted many custom cars for Ford and other manufacturers. I have seen some of his show cars and they are HOT! He also said the body is in good shape with no dings or issues, so the prep work would be easy, which leads to the good price. Well that and the fact he is a little slow right now.

For little money it is a good daily driver.
I would slowly restore it and enjoy driving the car.
On german autobahn nobody would see the scratches! ;-)

So have you decided to keep it? I agree that the only way I would put one dime into it is if you are going to keep it for yourself. By the time you spend the minimum to get it road worthy there are much better 5speed S4's and GT's for the money invested that were never a basket case. The 29K S4 in Missouri comes to mind.

Yeah, fix it and keep it or sell it to someone who wants to fix it and keep it. Can't imagine parting out that car.

LOL... what you cant read English at 150mph

I have made no official decisions yet, other than see what I can do with the title, and to drive it for a couple hours to make sure everything is working / figure out what is not. That will aid in the decision process

Why would you part out any car this rare?

Seriously.

Fix it or sell to someone that will. You could easily make a financial argument against ANY car on earth. A GTS was never about rational, it's about passion for a cool car.

Have you seen what a completely useless 356 shell goes for these days? There was a point where you could buy a nice 356 for very reasonable money. Today you can hardly get a completely rusted though shell for the price you paid for that GTS.

I many states they simply dump any "salvage" designation after 6-9 years old anyway.

Here's the original thread (I think it is the same car, check the VIN):
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...s-on-ebay.html

Apparently Florida issued a "Certificate of Destruction" in lieu of a title, which got traded in for a junk or salvage title in South Dakota. Each state has its own rules, and I am sure there is way to get a usable title-- with some creativity, and likely some travel. But if it as clean mechanically as you say, I think it would definitely be worth it.

No matter how clean the title gets, that history isn't going away, or the impact on the resale value.

Ah, so it is the mythical Toronto/FL/SD barn-car!

Prove us wrong, victor25! With enough time, money, creativity and fast-talking you could be the one to bring it back to life!

Sell it to someone in Kentucky.

Out-of-State Vehicles with Junking Certificate/Unrebuildable Title/Certificates of Destruction/Non-Repairable or Scrap Documents

Any vehicle that has an out-of-state junking certificate or an unrebuildable title that is on a secure document must obtain a Kentucky Salvage Title before applying through the rebuilt procedure. Speed titles are not allowed for these vehicles.

I personally don't drive a title, I drive a car. This car is rare enough that at some future point many wont care what the history is as long as they can own the car.

Some of the best classics on earth we built from just rusty frames.

Life before the internet and carfax. I've seen cars get "salvage " titles for stupid reasons too. So I take them with a grain of salt these days.
