Redline for an LSD trans???????

My LSD had the same chattering problem as Bill Ball's did with straight Redline NS, changed to Mobil 1 LS 75/90 per Greg Brown's recommendation with immediate improvement. Shifts well too, with slight (maybe only perceived...) improvement over the Redline NS.
FWIW, I had only intended to run the straight Redline NS for a short time after transmission surgery and then replace it anyway. I would have mixed it with non-NS if I had any at the time, but was lazy and did not think that anything would be hurt... I would have certainly mixed it if I had planned on leaving it in for awhile as that is what I used the last time I changed transmission oil, and had no chattering problem. Since I had used up almost all of my stock of Redline and had to buy more oil anyway, I decided to go with Greg's suggestion of Mobil 1.

Getting ready to drain the Redline mix and replace with the Mobil 1 LS 75W90 synthetic. I have a 5 speed with LSD. The Redline 3 qt / 2 qt combo works well but at times its tough to shift and then its fine... some chatter... then none... kinda weird Gonna give Mobil 1 a try

I dont think it has much to do with MY exactly, but probably more to do with differing rearends... Standard, LSD, etc.

I've heard RUMORS that if you use the Redline Synthetic 75W90 gear oil that it will EVENTUALLY make your transmission & differential seals leak... Well, I'm here to tell ya the critics were correct as it started leaking (minor) within 10K miles of putting in the Redline.
I changed it out to Mobil 1 75W90 LS Synthetic last night. This crap is too damn expensive to be changing out all the time... $11.00 X 5 quarts = $55.00 worth of smooth shifting

Hi All
I recently had the synchros changed in my GT. The first owner apparently drove the car for a while without bleeding the clutch, which led to worn syncros.
We put NS in and after 2000 miles it seems to shift fine without chatter. I have also heard that it causes the seals to fail. We will see. I hope not!
I am a fan of Redline, because my the transaxle in my SAAB 900 made it to 200'000 miles and I used almost exclusively Redline... That's actually very good for a classic SAAB 900, by the way. Of course, this is a different car with different requirements, etc... But just sayin'
Cheers, JP

A few people have no chatter with straight Redline NS. Others use a mix with 25% "non-NS" and find that works with no chatter. I had chatter with straight NS and went to Mobil 1 LS and chatter disappeared immediately. My personal experience is just with my automatic. If Mobil 1 LS shifts well, then that could be great for 5-speeds. I think that is what Greg Brown uses [confirmed below].

Never sure whats to 'blame' for that..
The oil didnt hurt the seals...probly CLEANED them well, and it was a leak for a long time, just all gunked up.
I dunno...its a whole new Church..gear oil.

Probably so... like flushing an old automatic tranny... THEN it starts leaking

Neither. Use Mobil 1 LS 75-90 and forget it.
If it is good enough for Porsche to put into the Porsche Cup Cars (and they have lots of plates in their limited slips) from the factory...it will work great in your 928 transmsison.

I'm not saying that Redline doesn't work...or that you shouldn't use it.
Just don't put it into one of my rebuilt gearboxes and expect me to warranty the gearbox....you are on your own the instant you pour it in.

Greg, Do you or anyone else have any idea as to why it "causes" the seals to leak??? I wish I would have read your posts prior to changing my tranny oil (the first time). Hopefully, it will STOP leaking now that I've changed to Mobil 1... yeah, right, like thats gonna happen

Leaked pretty badly out of the seal on 5th gear. He called me to find out what he should do.
We talked about this and he switched to Mobil One....and as far as I know, the leak stopped, or slowed to the point where it wasn't an issue.
In the "early days" of Mobil One engine oil (924s were the rage) that stuff would leak out of the seals virtually as fast as you could pour it in the top. We could take a completely dry 924, put in Mobil One, and it would be a sprinkler in a month. That stuff sucked, in the early days.
From what I can tell, Redline Gear Oil has a similar issue.
