Hey Mickster,
Yeah, I was at brian's yesterday. The owner, Brian himself, told me he was selling for a friend. Exterior condition was pretty good, but car has sat for a while. He claimed timing belt was good, but last belt change was in 93. Engine felt strong and it idled well but tranny felt like it shifted much harder than it should. Tried to make a deal as is since he didn't want to put time in it. I almost bought this car until I realized the odometer doesn't work. That makes me nervous but I know it's prob a broken tumbler gear. Lot of random things to repair too, like window switch, powerseats, ac, both frt and rear windshield wipers, headliner, door panels, leather shrinkage, rattles/clunks, etc. I could keep going but my old 85 928 did not have so many issues and it had 68k on the clock before I sold it. After this random test drive, I am missing my old car and am still mulling this one over. I though I was over 928's but I guess like you, the bug is back. Lol!

Thank you Mel for putting me in touch with the owner. The owner did reply to me e-mail saying that the intake gaskets, and a few other items needed to be fixed. Looks like it also needs, tb,wp, (last replaced over 9 years ago), all fluids, fuel lines, intake refresh, and the list of things above that 928Benz mentioned above. Then there is the unknowns, re: mileage, brakes, tires, TT bearings, trans, flex plate, electricals, etc. Pictures do this car justice, but the maintenance schedule does not .02. 77Tony

btw, Paul also had the clamp put on the TT at the flex plate when the tranny was done (I think Roger's simple clamp)

Everything has its price point in the market. I believe the owner's price was taking into account the needed maintenance. Maybe he has some room for negotiation, I don't know. I know he doesn't need to sell it & he doesn't need the money. After having it in his family for 15 yrs, he just hasn't been driving it so decided to sell it. I don't think this 928 is a candidate to be fixed up to be resold. Probably most ideal for someone wanting to have a 928 long term that has low mileage, a very nice body & interior, & can do most of the needed maintenance themselves. How many 27 year old cars don't need some maintenance? Especially one that has been sitting in a garage & only had 4,000 miles put on it since 2003. Its where a ppi becomes invaluable, especially a car you can't look at in person.
I'm certain if this car had everything completely sorted out it would be selling for much more. Especially being an 86.5 with only 63k miles on it, practically perfect body & paint, & almost perfect interior too. The drivers bolster was only real interior concern I saw. There is another really nice 86.5 listed here right now for $11.5k. And as nice as that one is with lots of updates, the mileage is 99k, & it still needs some work, including the ac & odo. So most cars this age need something, no matter how well they have been maintained. I think that car will bring that kind of money too as nice as it looks & sounds.
If I had the room & hadn't recently purchased our third Porsche, I'd certainly have no problems having this one in my garage.

Yep on all the little things that still need to be addressed - whether its rountine maintenance or defered with some "unknowns" like old timing belts with 4K miles on them. I paid what I consider top dollar for a very nice 86.5 with 41K miles that had a parking lot crash - some repaint - big whoop
Still, very nice car with almost perfect all leather interior, 5 speed & LSD to boot, but STILL needed a few GRAND in "unknown" maintenance. Gotta take it all into consideration - which I didnt know enough about at the time... but, I'm learning everyday! A nicely sorted car will still need something... and, one that has quite a few unknowns can quickly drain your "fix the car" budget in a heartbeat.

I don't think you'll buy many 17-34 year old cars that won't have routine maintenance needs after you purchase it. No matter how much was done to change of ownership.
I've had three 928s, all with fairly good maintenance records prior to my ownership. My 1st '85, the owner had spent over $12k at Brumos on it within 2-3 years of me buying it. My wife's '91 was personally owned by Capt. Earl. He had gone through the mechanicals as only he can do the previous six months to my purchase. Both cars needed things done to them within the 1st few months of ownership. My wife's car had magic blower syndrome on the drive home from PA with the car.
Stuff goes out as we all know, it happens. And the standard maintenance doesn't go away. I believe most 928 owners don't think about recouping their maintenance costs during their ownership when they sell, even if they do the work themselves. That's not at the top of the list of reasons for owning one. And all cars require some level of maintenance, whether they are driven or sitting. Its the cost of ownership, and hopefully the enjoyment we receive from these cars far outweighs any maintenance costs. Hopefully.

I think perhaps you are confusing this car's needs with the one that 928Benz was referencing that he looked at in person. This 928's needed repairs are no where near as extensive of that car. Unless I missed something, there are no concerns with the mileage or the electricals, etc.

I just noticed on the Local Craigslist there are three other 86.5s in our area for sale. None as nice or as low of mileage as the one I posted this thread about, but still interesting that so many are on the market right now.
