Default 86.5 for sale with 63k miles

I was contacted by the owner of a 1986.5 auto who wants to sell it. It’s been in his family for about 15 years & appears well cared for overall. I went to see it & drive it a few weeks ago. It has 63,232 miles on it; VIN#1480; Meteormetallic dark grey with maroon interior. I didn't see any body dings or even any scratches. There were no dash or pod cracks. Interior was in overall good condition, maybe could use carpet vacuumed & possibly detailed some. No tears or damage that I saw other than the typical driver’s seat bolster wear. All components looked in good condition. Engine bay looked clean. Full tool kit. From the Brumos invoice he gave me its only had 4,120 miles on it since 2003. At that time(59k), they did the 60k service, including TB/WP, tensioner & rollers, belts, hoses, etc.

Regarding needed work that he told me of, and/or I noticed: AC needs work(had a receipt from 61.5k miles where the evaporator & expansion valve were replaced); Rear wiper DNW; Anti-lock brake light was on in the dash(he had not had that diagnosed); rear hatch receiver needs the insert; outside mirror switch appears backwards, but works. Every other switch I tried worked & I think I tried them all. I did not look under the car. I would guess that the motor mounts have not been replaced. I’m certainly no mechanic, and did not do a thorough ppi, but I tried to look at the more common & obvious areas. If someone is interested & wants a ppi done, I can give my mechanics info as he knows 928s well. And there is always Brumos Porsche.

It cranked fine, & idled well. When I drove it I thought it had good acceleration, shifted well, drove straight, and braked well. It became very tempting. I’d buy it myself if it weren’t for having 3 P-cars currently, & my wife wondering when I’m going to build another garage for my addiction. I have nothing to gain in posting this. He asked me if I knew of potential buyers since he was told I was connected to the 928 world. I wanted to see the car in person since I don’t get many chances to see other 928s around here. With it being an 86.5, I knew it would be of interest to the 928 community. It took a few weeks to find the time to download the pics from my camera & write this thread. Watching the 24 Hours of Daytona on tv has afforded me the time tonight.

This is how I ended up with my current ’85, someone told me about it; I went to see it & posted it here on RL. In that instance, no one here showed any interest. Then a couple weeks later my wife & daughter told me to buy it & sell my previous ’85 cause they liked it better. They won’t get the chance this time cause I’m not bringing it home for them to see(although he did offer for me to drive the car home if I wanted to).

The asking price on this one is $9,000. The owner is a very reputable person, well established in the business community here. I’ve known of him for almost 30 years, but never met him until I saw the car. In meeting him, he matched his reputation. If anyone is seriously interested, pm or email me, & I will provide his contact info. I also have more photos, but have tried to show a good representation of the car here. I hope it goes to a good home cause I thought it was a very nice 928.

Yeah I thought the same thing, but if it did have a 5 spd the price would be higher. Heck if it was a 5 spd it wouldn't be posted here cause I would have driven it home & hid it behind one of my other cars so my wife wouldn't see it!

This looks like one of the 928's people will regret letting slip away.

Ed, Looks like a very nice, original 86.5. Mel, I left a V/M & e-m the owner. Thank you for the pics, your review, and the owners contact info. Heinrich, a PPI with flex plate check is on the list. 77Tony

Wow I wish my 86 was that nice. Good price considering the amount of work it takes to get an interior that nice, and the fact that its complete (Tools, all working switches etc..).. GLWS hope it goes to a good home. These unmolested well-cared for cars are getting rare.

Did this car ever get sold? Haven't owned a 928 in years and the itch is growing except I'm all the way in NYC. I just saw same exact car and color combo here in NJ with 36k for 9900. It's not as nice as this one tho.
