I have a CDR-220 (modded so by Stefan so the screen is visible at the viewing angle in a 928, an important detail if you want to go this way) and one of Stefan's adapters that converts it for use with the factory power connector and 8-pin DIN cable that runs from the head unit to the factory 6-channel amp. (The DIN cable runs from the center console down the right side of the transmission tunnel under the carpet about where your left knee is if you're sitting in the seat. Here's the run under the carpet (the rectangle thingee is part of the cable retainer setup that holds everything flat against the tunnel):
FWIW I paid $485 for the combo from SW Stereo back in 2006. Hopefully it's cheaper by now.... Here are a couple of threads on them, with pics of the adapter and its interface with the factory wiring:

You could use 2 amps & keep the 10 speaker setup:
(1) 2-channel amp for the woofers
(1) 4-channel amp for the pairs at the corners
(4) crossovers, 1 for each pair at the corners (each door; each inner quarter)
This will also allow tuneability (sp?) at each corner for highs & mids/lows... with lows for the woofers only.
To get better sound yet, swap in some good aftermarket (non-paper cones) speakers at all locations. Hidden under the factory grills, nobody would be the wiser. Popular consensus is that MB Quarts offer the closest to factory sizes & depths and good quality. Use search to find threads with part numbers...

Its got all 6 channels in one nice neat little package. This is my plan B option and I think it has the crossover built in.

Pretty sure that JL won't fit under the cover (though it looks like a really nice amp. I had a JL in my GTS for a while. )
Factory amp dimensions:
Height:2-1/8"
Length 7.25"
Width 6.5"

I have mine mounted to the rear seat backs... clearance under/beside the passenger seat is not enough.

I probably would try ti mount it somewere in the cargo area.
SIDE NOTE: The quality of the responses on this forum are amazing! I guess it is a special person that owns and enjoys a 928

My JL amp is mounted on the back left rear seat.
wires hide nice right down close to the bat for good power.
and the JL crossovers are sweet and will fit in the door same place as the old one.

I finally found a 4-channel amp which is a good fit to replace the stock 10-speaker amp (89-95). A Soundstream PN4.320D . More info in this other thread:
https://rennlist.com/forums/9879628-post48.html
The other location I considered hiding an amp is inside the rear centre console - obviously not an option for those with rear AC. I still prefer the stock amp location however, so it doesn't sacrifice storage.
I've been reading amp specs and have a spreadsheet of dimensions of the various amps on the market, and this soundstream one is the first decent candidate I've found which is a positive "fits in the stock location".
Prior to this, the nearest two candidates I had in my spreadsheet were:
Alpine ktp-445U (not bridgeable and low power, but small)
JL Audio XD400/4 (little too long once you figure on connectors, at 8.5x7x2")

I am in the process of installing the Alpine KTP-445U along with a new Blaupunkt Toronto 420 BT head unit. I can verify the Alpine fits nicely under the passenger side carpeted cover in the stock location. I will post back how it sounds once I get it finished up and commissioned today.

I am in the process of replacing the original old Blaupunkt Berlin IQR 88 system with new parts so I thought I'd share...
The head unit is a Blaupunkt Toronto 420BT which I feel looks reasonably contemporary.
The head unit drives the front and rear speakers directly. The woofers are driven by a Blaupunkt THA 275 amplifier through the pre-amp out of the head unit. The amp can handle the 2 ohm speakers and fits in the factory location. The aluminum brackets of the stock amp were modified to fit the new unit. The amp has a low pass filter with adjustable cut-off and adjustable input sensitivity.
It works and sounds well with the project 9 door speaker kit (to my ears, at least).
Enclosed are a few pics taken during the installation process.
