Next thing to research: audio amps
Hi folks,
Currently I've got a nice, but inappropriately large, and badly located, JL Audio amplifier consuming the entire RR passenger footwell.
It's got to go.
Does anybody make any decent four channel amps that will fit under that right-side cover where the factory amp is/was?
Otherwise I may just switch back to using the not too terrible power of the head unit....
Thanks,
Paul

Look at the Alpine F-300. it's small compared to other amps. Puts out 50-75 watts. I have it in my 951 w/Infinity Kappa components and it sounds great. I have it mounted above the passenger footwell behind the glove box(stealth). I plan to use another one in my wife's 83 928S.

Check out JL Audio's new class D amps. Much smaller for under the seat. http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_a...php?page_id=10

Thanks.
I've looked at the JL audio xd400/4, which is relatively small, and quite a bit smaller than the current amp or the Alpine that was mentioned. It's still too bit to go in the factory amp mounting location, though.
I'm going to check with a couple of car audio sites to see if they have something really small. I think I could get away with about 6.5" x 10" x 1.75" or so under the side cover.
Otherwise, the suggestion of up under the dash / above CE sounds like something to look into.
Cheers,
Paul

And there's really not enough room under the seat for anything more than a 1" high amp. I suppose this varies a bit with model year and type of seat, but with the stock seats in my 89, it's cramped under there, especially if you move the seat rearward and down.
For the side compartment area, maybe a Sony Xplod Slim XM4S would fit:
1.71" Height x 8.77" Width x 7.71" Depth - maybe a bit too wide. I don't know any smaller multichannels.

For posterity, 'cause I've never seen the factory 6-channel amp dimensions listed on RL:
Length: 7.28"
Width: 6.55"
Height: 2.12"

The DIN plug connection faces forward, here's looking from the CE panel:
And a shot from the rear to show the rear speaker connections and the bracket orientation:

I began my search for a new system because the original one was stripped out. I went to the local audio dealer / installer and showed him the car and asked what they would do. He said "We will put the amp under the seat and because it is a class D there will be very little heat..........and......and..........it will be great. Here is the loan application."
I was suspicious of the speaker size the salesman suggested and should have also been cautious of the "under the seat" location. Me bad. As pointed out here there is maybe room for a pair of gloves under the seat in the full down position.
I am no expert when it comes to the latest systems (Post 1970's). I had to learn what a crossover was. I searched through this forum and observed the many solutions that others had accomplished. I felt brave (stupid) enough to spend many days doing it myself rather than let someone hack up the car in a couple of hours. Also the cost would be a little more than half not counting my time. I then placed my part orders.
The amp arrived last night and although it is small (10.23" X 7.09" X 2.05" or 260mm X 180mm X 52mm) I need to find a proper location for it. The crossovers are rather large. My thought is to remove the air pump from the spare and use this space. I would insert a round disk and attach the crossovers to the bottom and the amp to the top. This set up would then be lowered into the spare. There may be about an inch of air space between the top of the amp and the bottom of the spare cover. The air pump will then need a home.
Now after this long introduction here are my questions:
Will there be enough air to keep the amp cool in my proposed location ?
Are there any other places that will work ?
Thank you in advance for your advice.
PS Thank you for the original amp photos and dimensions.

Not sure if they are still availble, but I have an Orion Cobalt 4 channel amp that sounds great and fits within the spare tire well, actually inside the spare tire wheel. I did have to grind the corners off slightly, but now it's a very snug fit and I haven't had any problems with overheating. I bought a small compressor that I keep lose in the rear since the stock compressor had to be removed.

Thank you Don.
That is a nice amp and the crossovers are inside. I am pleased that you don't have a heat issue with it in the spare. Sounds like I will be safe with my install there. There are some on Amazon even though it is discontinued.

I should add that I haven't been through a Texas summer yet with this setup, but I did do some testing with a remote digital thermometer and it doesn't look like I'll have problems in the summer either.

After thinking about this a bit more, I wonder if under the passenger seat might not be a possibility.
The driver's seat has the seat memory controller under it, but the passenger seat doesn't have anything in that position. Sony makes a 4-channel amp, the XM-4S, that's pretty small and only 1 3/4 inches thick. I think I might be able to mount that up under the passenger seat in much the same way the seat memory controller mounts under the driver's seat.
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks,
Paul
