My Leaky Tranny. I'm Screwed, Part II - NOW UNSCREWED - YEAH!

I would use Dexron VI. GM says that the specs are much tighter on VI, and any fluid that meets GM specs is good - that meant that I bought the Walmart fluid, which is quite a bit less expensive. There was a noticeable improvement in shift quality after I changed the fluid in Lynn's Suburban (225K miles). It was OK before, just better after.

Doc is right about the flexplate on the TC pulling it away from the rear of the housing just enough to not rub......the tech that rebuilt my trans showed me that when I picked up mine......the tolerance IS that tight.....

Bill,
Flushing the lines can be done simply blowing in to one tube and letting the oil drain out the other. You could used the same pump you put oil in the trans to load it up one pipe with some flush and then blow it out. You can always take the coolers off - does the 89 have the one below the radiator and flush it.
I am a little confused on one point - the electric drill test. Has anyone actually done this? If so what is determined by the test. How fast can you get the trans to spin. Perhaps I could see hooking up an electric motor - say 5HP with a variable controller but that would require building a gig. Anyone have any input on this.
Good Luck Bill.

There's not enough dimension to miss the tabs, have the convertor sit "on top" of the tabs, and bolt the housing on, without this happening.

Thank you, Greg. I would have much preferred to have come down to Anaheim and had you look over my shoulder, but I just up and ran with it myself. I found the clearance checking a bit of a challenge with my amateur tools, but I think I got it. The new parts from George's donor tranny look much better than mine. I see no reason to expect it to malfunction, but I won't know until tomorrow. Thanks again for your suggestions and support.

Yes, I have gotten more familiar with some of the inside of the tranny; I'd say about 20%. But I have seen things I don't understand, like what caused the burning and scoring inside the rear hub of the primary pump. There's nothing that would seem to be able to rub against it, at least on the inside beveled area where it is messed up. The snout end is supposed to be .02-.03" away from a bearing sitting inside the K-1, and it looks like it was. The end is not discolored and the bearing appears to be OK. Oh, well. I hope that my careful assembly remedied that.
If I remove the valve body for cleaning, I may not get it back together today - I don't have the gasket(s). There is a TransTec outlet in San Leandro that I may visit today. They are backordered on the complete tranny seal kit.

I've been watching this thread and the previous with great interest and i'm pullin' for ya, Bill! I've RnR'd my transmission 2x and i know what it is you're going through. i had the same leak from the front grate that got worse after i changed the fluid and filter (must have been a thinner formula than what was in there). Anyhow - tried to reseal the front pump o-rings, new pump gasket, and TC carrier bearings in the bell (WYAIT), put it all together and it was worse. I found a good working used tranny from a totaled car, same year, recently running and working - dropped out the original, put the "new" used one in and have been on my way since. 2nd time always goes faster!
Very cool inner workings that i don't think i fully understood the first time around. Actually, the idea of opening one of those up again to replace any parts gives me the heebeejeebees. Sounds like you have all the right karma happening, wish i were closer to lend a hand. Stay methodical (as i've seen you are) and hopefully all will work.
