DAMMIT I work Sundays..........................................figures.....

Jeff.....a better test would be on MCE's dyno...since he did your "before" runs..... BTW when he tested my 928 (2.20) in 4th he is always impressed at how its "above 190mph"...he also comments on how the fastest his dyno has EVER seen is with 928's......Sean's was well over 200mph when he shut it down....since he was scared....

The good news is Jim has tested on MCE's dyno...so he will have a good correction factor....

Talk about "git er done". This is a great outcome, congrats Bill. You are amazing.

Oh, and that is a great avatar, lots going on in that picture.

Check-out the jackstands on the lift. I wondered how that work could be done on a lift.

How many corp types, outside of rennlist, can boast a garage like that with a supercar spread all over it?

I hope it helps someone with a similar predicament, if that ever happens. All-in-all, it wasn't that hard, but since it should never have been a problem (there was no leak or other problems until I tried to replace the original non-leaking seal, tranny in the car), I was upset by it. My car has been dead-on reliable because I drive it regularly, do good but not excessive maintenance and generally don't try to fix things that aren't broken or aren't about to break. The no-speedo issue after swapping in an LSD was a new one on me and maybe for a lot of people. I got familiar with the front half of my automatic tranny and have a new appreciation of the Bowden cable. The tranny is still very good at 240K miles and what was looked at inside was in remarkably good condition with almost no significant wear except after whatever mishap happened during the rebuilder's reassembly. As long as it keeps shifting crisply when I ask it to, I'll just do the 30K mile fluid and filter change and be very happy.

Bill,
Glad you and your 928 are well again. I am getting ready to take the front of my trans apart to change the seal and pump oring. Should I leave it alone or do you suggest I change them for a leak (one drop) every time I park it.

My father used to say:

'there are fitters and there are mechanics'

'whats the diff. a very much younger Malcom said'

'one fella just fits new parts, thats all he knows what to do; the other fella figures out what part is broken, takes it off, repairs it then refits it.....thats a mechanic'

Bill you are very much a mechanic

Well, this is a good one. I assume you are sure it is coming from the TC area by where the drips are hanging, and not from the pan or hose connections. Many people tolerate slow drips for years. I did. I had an occasional drip and drove 15-20K miles that way waiting for a better reason to deal with it, such as TT or TC cover bearings going bad. But when I got home from Sharktoberfest I was surprised to see a substantial trail of tranny fluid following me into the garage. Man, did I luck out! Had that drip started somewhat earlier on the 400 mile trip home I could have been stranded and fried the tranny. So, it seems these things are hard to predict. Most typical seal leaks do not develop suddenly into gushers, but this one did.

Taking apart the primary pump to replace that o-ring, which definitely should be done as it gets brittle with age (mine was), is not exactly trivial. You need to make up a tool to compress the spring center, which others have shown (Schocki, I think). Look for that.

Anyway, I'd probably do the leak repair sooner than later, even though these things are typically slowly progressive.

Thomas,

Here is the deal. The o-ring will get hard and start to leak. Mercedes suggests the O-ring to be replaced with the seal for this reason. What happens when the o-ring starts to leak is the front pump started to lose pressue and lubrication. The tollerances in the pump are very tight and rotor can begin to chafe the backing plate making a metalic sound. At that point the trans loosing pressure will become eratic. It can happen within a very few miles. If you start at this point you can save the transmission but once it starts to make noise you will have to change the pump which is not cheap.

I think i some ways Bill was trying to prempt this from happening to his car.

Dan,
Thank you for the explanation. I will go forward and replace the o ring and seal. The trans is up on the high vertical hoist and clean so conditions are good. I would like to get rid of the pesky leak. I will start to search for directions.

Have a great day

True but, the leak has to be pretty big to loose pressure. A drop every now and then is not enough.

Just do it with the tranny TC end facing UP a bit if you can.

Flat can cause problems..got a good lesson on this in my own tranny swap.

I second this with the S4's large and heavy TC.

Yeah, but my minor leak did rather suddenly become substantial somewhere near the end of my 400 mile return trip in October. True, I had driven to Texas and back (3500 miles) and much more with that minor drip. So, I think it's common that old, worn, rigid, dripping seals hang in there for quite a while, so I didn't get alarmed by mine, but the sudden change has me rethinking this.
