I am having EXACTLY this problem with mine with the exception that after it got over the freewheeling stage, it no longer shifts out of 2nd gear, ever. I have been thru 2 or 3 fluid changes with the addition of TransX in the delusional hope that by some miracle the problem would magically cure itself. My car's been sitting for about 3 months now. My last hope is/was removing the valve body and trying a thorough cleaning, but now seeing that your symptoms pretty much exactly match mine, looks like I will have to bite the bullet and just have the damn transmission rebuilt. I wish you well Bill, I can sympathize.

Bill,
It is certainly something I will consider as I am not thrilled with the prospect of removing the transmission and having it rebuilt. I know my Bowden cable is functioning as I can kick mine into 1st gear easily if I want, it is just getting it to go into 3rd & 4th... Like you, these things (autos) are one area I am just about clueless as far as function. Hopefully the valve body is the key here.
I am really happy that you have successfully gotten your car back on the road, I hope to have a similar situation sometime soon. Job well done, Bill.

Ya..since my new tranny install, mine wants to downshift just a RCH too quickly, and upshifts a bit harsh.
Will go turn the modulator (which is new) back maybe 1/4 turn, and losing the bowden an RCH as well.

I found with the Bowder cable when it is too loose the transmission willl do funny things. Disconnected it is a crap shot at best.
There is a trade off. When adjusted to allow WOT the treans is a little lazy. You can improve around town performance by adjusting the cable tighter. The preformance will improve but at the cost of not getting WOT. I found this preferable on my 85 for all around driving.
If you hot wire the kick down switch then the trans is going to act weird and not shift up correctly. The kick down solenoid can get stuck and give some of the symptoms you are experiencing with up shifts. For some reason it seems to get locked in place.

BTW, I agree with Dan about hotwiring of the kickdown. I tried it and I didn't like the tranny behavior at all. I prefer to row the shifter to whatever gear I want. I've been doing that since I got the car. It only sits in D when I'm cruising down the freeway. It seems that this exercise is good for the tranny.

FWIW on bowden cable adjustments ,
usually turning the cable end 1/4 turn when things are close is enough to make changes that you need.
IE put the ball cup on with no tension to the arm stud then test ,
then turn the ball cup in a 1/4 turn eventually you will find the sweet spot
NOTE make sure the throttle cable is adjusted first as loosening the throttle cable will in effect tighten the Bowden and vica versa this is for the S4 and later cars

Man, my tranny is back to its old, tight self. The car put a big smile on my face as I blew down the road to a doctor's appointment. The LSD definitely chatters in slow turns, like parking lot maneuvers. Just need the speedo function back, and it's all good again.

Bill:
This is great news.
Now..if we can get MarkK and others to go after this guy..

We can get some _pretty_ 928s on TV.
Also: You wanna met at Jim Morton's shop sunday afternoon? Thought 'might see what the rollers say right now before the next round of small changes to the system.
All cut & dried to him...zero other factors.

Jeff: If you have appointment for Jim's rollers, I'll be there. I probably should throw mine on as well, if Jim has time, as I have a cam change planned.
