Default Transmissions: stock 2.2 vs corvette 6 speed. Laguna Seca comparison

vs

Lots of talk about gear ratios, rear ends, 6speeds vs 5speeds, etc. I think the discussion really becomes about what is strong enough to handle the power, relaiable and has a good feel to get through the gears quickly as a slow shift can drop your ave HP down over 5% (i.e. HP-seconds).

These are races from the SCCA weekend this Oct 2011. however, i was in the AV8SS group 3 and my old ITE group is where the vets are! just my luck, as soon as I start switching groups , all the fun cars start to show back up!

Not really sure what you were trying to show. I see and hear driving style more than anything to do with the transmission itself.

The point was one that i have mentioned a few times. guys get all caught up with "6speed" thinking they willl get closer gears, or 3.xx:1 rear ends, to gear down and pick up "torque", but in reality, this is a clear example of two cars that have near the exact same gearing.

Its pretty funny, the looks ill get after a nose to tail race with a vet, or someone watching the race when they ask about what my rear end is, and I say, "its a 2.2". Bottomline, its the gear ratios that matter, and in this case the C5 gear box and the S4 are near idential for usable gears and ratios on a track like laguna. 3 gears used. i used two cars with simlar lap times. (im about 1-2 seconds faster, but the HP weight is near the same for both cars.)

remember, i raced with these guys for years. he has a ton of power in that thing, is a little slow on the shifts and the thing handles really well. look at my prior videos to see how long and where I dispose of that red Panos in my racesl he runs up and passes him like he is standing still. anyone know the HP of that car?? i bet its over 400rwhp for sure. that car should easily be a 1:36 car.

his buddie's (bob?) (jim?) video is pretty good too! and it has the telemetry on it too.

I'm not sure the HP of the T1 car.....I think it must run a stock-ish LS6....maybe just a free flow exhaust + headers and a slight cam change + blueprinting....I'd guess its under 400whp....

His NASA Vette (Bobs) is ST2....I think his racing weight is high 3250lbs so that vette must be 373whp....but I am nearly sure both vettes have 5.7L engines....

Correct, T1 cars are basically stock engined with a few goodies in the suspension department and other bits for reliability.

Mark, I understand what you're trying to get at now. But I wouldn't consider the transmission in the 928 to be in the same UNIVERSE as the T56 or the newer Tremec in the Corvettes as far as strength is concerned. Not even close. Having had both a T56 in a F-body and a C5, I prefer those to the gearbox in my '86.

The stock T56 has 2 OD gears (5th and 6th) and is not a close rationgear box by any stretch of the imagination. The 928 does have a 2.2 differential but if you do the calculations thought the gearbox, it's actually not as bad as it sounds.

I know, but some folks think it is. if you look at % of rpm drop per redline vs MPH, they are amazingly close in the operatonal range on the track. that was the point of all this anyway.

most of the T1 competitors are at around 400rwhp with the "stock " goodies.

I totally agree, the 928 box is no where the strength of the tremec. the discussion was strictly ratio and HP application.
