My Penance (Letting the cat out of the bag)
So as some of you may know, even though I had it removed from my avatar info, I am a disassembler.
I disassemble because its the first step in rejuvenation, but over the past decade, for reasons not germain to this conversation, the rejuvenation part has been very slow, stunted and not to my liking so far (because its not done). While some of those boats have already sailed, and others are now much better and back on track, I have been given the opportunity for penance for my sins.
I have in possession, a 1986.5 928 that has 31,000 original miles.
It is a "barn find" in the truest sense of the word.
It is Red.
Its a 5spd.
The seats are unworn, the carpet is soft, the doors shut like the seals were just replaced, and I just pulled the engine
The reason that I pulled the engine is that the car has sat in this barn since 1997. Thats what the plates say the next registration was going to be due. This was obviously going to be the major step in getting this car back on the road so that someone other than me can take good care of the car.
I know I must bring it back to stock and not change anything, but make it new again.
The seals are cracked and oily, the fuel lines are hard, but the painted intake pieces look nearly perfect in their original color (or what I feel is the color)
While the mileage is not single digits, I feel its a great representation of an original car in a very unique color scheme (tan/brown two tone interior and red exterior)
This thread will be worthless without pics for just a bit longer. It was raining today so the pics would never have looked good. I'll be photographing the interior as well as work ongoing on the engine.

My penance is to make this car seem like its new and stock again. No changes. No upgrades or downgrades.
It may be a concour type vehicle.

I feel like the Tensioner is something I would change if it were going to be driven in my manner, but I already have the parts for a completely rebuilt stock tensioner. If someone that is "not from 'round here" ends up with it - that would be confusing next time its opened up.
But the computer chips - the sane ones - what about that?
How about this - I'll be using the cam coming aparatus to check the cam timing (though I will also be setting the cams with the covers off since I am replacing those seals **but not powdercoating, as I am trying to stay original, and they are in very good shape**)

I have this dynamic going on between my 79 and my 88. On my 79 nothing is stock. Everything is modified or upgraded. Wheels, tires, brakes, shocks, suspension, engine, exhaust, shift linkage, interior, exterior: everything. On my '88 everything is stock. The effort on it is only about restoring it to good stock condition. It's a different task with a different feel but also rewarding. It will never be the creampuff I think yours is gonna be, but I am enjoying it anyway.
I do, however, have moments of doubt. For example, when all the ABS connectors fall to little crums on the floor. I am so tempted to rip the whole system out and throw it in the trash. Or when I see a late model 5 speed assembly I could buy locally and convert over to manual. Must resist.

In all fairness he did have Leroy and was able to do what he wanted and send him onto the next caretaker.
I am glad to see a car in this condition in his care. Regardless of the time frame it will be one hell of a nice car which is what is important.
I like the idea of keeping it visually stock and would personally do the Porken chip upgrade. The '87 FPR will not be visually noticeable so it still falls into the stock category.
