Anyone have experiences after buying a *Brand New* 928? ('79 in '79 etc.)
Starting a new thread to carry on a conversation started in this thread:
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-weissach.html
Who has bought a 928 when it was Brand Spanking New? (bought a '78 in 1978, bought a '79 in 1979, etc. to buying a new '95 GTS in 1995 etc.)
What were your experiences during the first years of ownership?
Were there quality/reliability issues with any particular components (hopefully improved by Porsche over time)?
Did you find points against your license accumulating?
Etc.

I'll start. Bought my auto 81 new in '81. Still have it.
Only problems I recall were that the brake pressure regulator failed at 42k, resulting in braking only on one pair of diagonal wheels! Other than that, all routine maintenance, on 3rd TB and second WP. Probably the most reliable car ( pre-2000) that I owned.
Oh, and no tickets!

Those are my wheels. I thought mine were the only two-tone phone dials on the planet. I like the silver lips on the inner parts of the 5 openings as well. Mine are just silver on the lip on the rim and the rest is black. Your car is a beauty!
Good idea for a thread too!

Cool thread. I hope there are more out there with stories.
Some other questions that I would like to hear about in the stories if possible.
Did you order your car special (I'm not even sure you could) or buy it off the lot ?
What were your reasons for choosing a color, an interior, an option...etc
The location of the dealership.
Neighbors or family reactions to your new 928.
First drive home or test drive experience.
Mechanical or other issues you had in your first year or so of ownership.
These are just things I've wondered about.

Apologies first for this is a bit of a thread creep, since I was not even close to being the original owner, but I have a pretty good picture of what the first 10 years were like, from the service records. And honestly, it doesn't paint a very pretty picture... Here's a spreadsheet from the first 10 years of what I would consider non-routine maintenance (though there's a TB or 2 in there somewhere.) Regardless, the only car older than 5 years old that I purchased new and still own to this day is my 88.5 Silver Rose Metalic 944 Turbo S, I guess despite knowing better I bought into the porsche limited edition nonsense again...

Hi,
In 1984 on my 20th birthday, my father told me: “As a birthday gift chose any car you want!”
As you can imagine I was completely trilled and at the same time a little confused about the choice, but no way I was going to leave this opportunity pass.
So, I chose my dream car at that time, the Lamborghini Countach!
I still remember my father calling Italy to know the conditions for buying a Countach and my sadness when they said that each car was made by order and will take about 3 months! No way I can wait that longer! What if my father thinks again in his proposal and realizes the “mistake” he has done giving his son a super car that at any age but especially at 20 can be a deadly weapon?
So, lets go to the second choice: Porsche 911 (930) Turbo!
I remember walking in the Lisbon Porsche Centre, at that time a very small one, with only one car in exhibition. Asking for the 930, one month for delivery!
Then, looking at the car in exhibition I remember thinking, “What the hell is that strange Porsche?”
It was no less than a beautiful 1984 928S in silver with a black full leather interior!
And when the guy said that for immediate delivery that was the only car available, what the hell, it’s a Porsche it can be bad lol!
To cut a long story short, unfortunately when we are young, we sometimes made mistakes that we regret for the rest of our life! And I made one with that car that was selling it after 6 months, because at that time I decided that I want a bigger and more practical car to drive with my friends! So I bought a 4x4 Mercedes G280 with a removable top, and I was quite happy about it because now I have a lot of space, get sun in my head and I can drive in the beach! How stupid I was! Still today I regret not keeping that 928S, it will be a one-owner car!
Fortunately after more than 20 years I have the opportunity to buy another one and confirm that the 928 is, in fact, my dream car!
And with all the problems it can have and all the headaches it can give, I won’t sell it for any money, it will be for my son, his son, etc!
Regards

I have all the paperwork on my '87 S4 and to my surprise the original owner's phone number listed was still good. I talked with him briefly and he said all good things about his first 4 years with the car. Nice to know anyways.
I also speak to the original owner of my '95 540i/6 who owned it until I have had it for the last few years. He kept it extremely nice and I appreciate that...

I made a reply to this sort of question about a month ago but can't find it now.
My wife and I purchased our 928S4 in Stutgart in January 1987 as we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. We still have it as we approach our fiftieth anniversary next year. Seventy six years old. Wish I could have gotten my daddy to buy me the car when I was a graduate from high school like one of the other fellows in this thread but my dad never made more than $5000 in his life and I had to wait until I was an aerospace engineer for 27 years.
Used the car for a ski vacation in St. Anton, Austria, then returned it to Stutgart where they put the cat on and shipped it to the US. Picked it up in Connecticut a month later.
Used it as a daily driver until 1997 when we retired and moved to Wyoming which is more kind to older folks (no crazy taxes). We now use it as a warm weather car (generally from June through November).
The car is actually pretty good in snow with the 50-50 weight distribution and when we skied in New England we never had a problem getting around Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. However we now live in the Snowy Range thirty miles west of Laramie and are almost a mile away from state plowed roads. Our old GMC 4x4 just makes more sense.
My recollection of difficulties as follows:
Very poor dealership that eventually went out of business about two years into our ownership.
Replaced a speaker ring (plastic ring that screws onto the speaker) about two or three months into ownership.
Replaced clutch actuator cable about one year into ownership
Replaced clutch actuator cable again about two years into ownership (probably poor dealer mechanic on first)
Replaced brake pads
Caught the dealership using the car to clown around when in for service; went out of business shortly thereafter.
Replaced alternator about three years into ownership. Used a foreign car repair shop. Quite satisfied.
Replaced tb about four years into ownership - went well beyond recommended mileage - lucked out.
Replaced cracked windshield - pitted and finally cracked
Replaced brake pads
Replaced water pump shortly thereafter
Replaced water pump again about three years later along with tb
Replaced clutch shortly thereafter
Repaired radiator tanks when first arrived in Wyoming
Replaced starter motor about one year into Wyoming
Replaced hot cable shortly thereafter (possibly owing to mistake when starter was replaced)
Replaced one driving light (corrosion)
Replaced brakes
Replaced radio
Re-upholstered front seats roughly two years ago - badly worn
Got tee-boned by an idiot - rear drivers side quarter panel
Body work and total auto repaint plus windshield replacement
Replaced a lot of wiring due to rodent problems - lots of mice in Wyoming
Replaced tb
Replaced main engine brain - ouch
Replaced fan computer that was apparently removed by upholsterer but may have been defective as I was having overheat problems previously. - car was laid up for two years - - very slow retired body man and mechanic but he did great work
At this time I'm close to putting the car up for the winter and expect to do (or maybe have done in the spring) the following things:
Fix AC and heater
Replace coolant level gauge (in tank)
Replace accelerator cable
Redo instrument pod lights and stuff
Bunch of other minor stuff
Probably replace all brake pads and front rotors
I love this car and it is sure to outlive me. My son or daughter will probably inherit it.

Not quite firsthand, but a friends father had a new one in about '82 or '83. He was very disapointed in it as he had sent it back several time trying to get the oil pan to not leak. Seems like a minor thing from here, but I guess if you had paid big $ for a new car you would expect zero leaks.
