Question 928S with 4.5L engine ...does it exist ???

Hi guys, I was wondering if a 928S has also been made with a 4.5L engine ?

I'm asking this because I'm a little bit confused regarding my euro 928 of 1980 :

- engine is (according to registration papers) a 4.5L engine with 240 Hp
- I have a single distributor
- but :
* I have the slotted big front discs of the 928S. Also the brake callipers are
larger on the front discs
* front bumper has 2 air ducts like the S
* rear lid has holes of where the spoiler was attached originally
* quarter windows have a black strip which is normally covered by the spoiler
* I have wear detectors on front and rear brakes

How can I detect if it is a 4.5L engine and if my car is a 928S instead of a plain 928 ???

thnx

Gerrit

You need to look at the engine numbers because it sounds like it is a 4.7 S , there were no 4.5 engined S cars. Would there have geen any savings on taxes by claiming it was a 4.5 ???

Could be the competition package 928... It would have all the S stuff except the 4.7L engine. Not sure they offered that in ROW cars though. The US got them because we didn't get the big fast engine the rest of the world got. I know they did sell ROW 4.5's and ROW S 4.7's at the same time, but again I am not sure that there were any "comp pkg" cars...

Comp pack was just 81/82? USA.

I seem to recall that in Europe you could take an early 928 back to Porsche and have it upgraded to an S, anybody know if that is correct?

Regards making sure its an S, I would check the vin, the block ID, the head casting number, intake runners and wur, if not more.

I believe 81-82 only for the USA Competition Package....never saw or heard of a 1980 so equipped.

We can tell if you have a Euro S top end from the part numbers on the heads and a photo of the intake.

ROW 4.5L got S brakes in middle of '80 MY. PET has VIN of the first car listed. IIRR its 0750.

How can I detect if it is a 4.5L engine and if my car is a 928S instead of a plain 928 ???
In old cars engine can be anything. If it was originally S or not can be easily check from VIN.

According to PET (when entering my VIN nr) I have a 928S.
I'll have to check the engine ID.

since you are in Europe...you most likely have a 1980 Euro S, with the 4.7L 300hp CIS engine....what is the engine code (stamped under the radiator hose)....my guess is the registration paperwork is wrong...

I have to check...I'll get back to you since I'm still at the office..
Hopefully my registration papers are wrong :-)
As for taxes, in Belgium it makes no difference as the car has been registered as oldtimer so annual tax is about $40.
As for performances, this could mean I have 300 HP instead of 240, not ?

I checked my Engine nr and it is M28/01 8190630
I do not understand because according to Porsche, this is a 4.5L engine of 1979..???? An my car's VIN nr is one from 1980 ????

So does this mean that this is a transition model to the real 928S , because except the 4.7L engine, I have everything from the 928S
