Yikes! I wonder if there is a limit to how radical a cam profile can be before it puts too much strain on the tensioner chain/pad and this happens.

in this case the tensioner in the 968 tensioner was never designed to have a load placed on it from this angle. Passenger side is exactly like the 968 in production.... this is 180 degrees out.....

Bill, the instances of a seized water pump I've seen, have resulted in a lot of destruction, mostly causing the belt to run in all sorts of directions. One of them, the belt kept running across a seized pump for a couple of miles, shaving the sides of the belt off but nonetheless still tracking the cams just fine.

in this case, oil pump turns normal passenger cam turns normal drivers cam.... locked up.... waterpump looks normal, no unusual belt wear on the smooth side...

You mentioned in an earlier post that these cams will be hung on the wall. Does that mean the end of your variocam system or did you have Mike Simard machine the new cams to work with the vario?

So at low rpm & high rpm the tensioner piston is extended & at midrange, it's relaxed? The operation is reversed from the passenger side?

If the only issue is that the tensioner is oriented in the opposite way on the driver's side and that causes the tensioner pad to come off, wouldn't it be pretty easy to modify the tensioner body to contain the pad better?

So, was the broken plastic pad originally on top of the tensioner plate seen to the right in the picture? Are the pad retaining screws still there? If not, they may be in the pan.

Looks like you are very ready for the parts swap. Should be a screamer. Good luck on the rest of the job.
