This has been on my to-do list for many years. I remember reading through this thread and your very good instructions, but never got around to ordering.
How much is it again?

Thx

Hey Ed, did you guys figure out if these would work for a 968?

I have a 944 S2, if it would similarly work for that too, I would love to order one of these as well.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the 968 should work. You can see from the posts starting at post #262 that it's a nicely isolated rheostat that's similar to the 928.

I don't know for sure whether st0ppy ever got a unit and installed on a 968.

The main configuration that won't work is a dimmer rheostat that's part of a headlight switch / instrumentation lighting dimmer combination where one side of the rheostat is internally connected to other circuitry and can't be isolated ("can't be isolated" in the sense that there aren't two rheostat terminals that aren't connected to anything else).

I'm hoping that others with more knowledge about 944s will chime in here.

Awesome! Can confirm the 944 S2 looks exactly like the 968 in post #262.

Any chance you have that kit in stock?

What about front lighting w/ a string of LED's?
Pick up a string of lights, put them up,
wait for sunset, and check out the look.
i front lit my instruments 12 years ago.
fantastic presentation, perfect light level ....
a blissful, life changing event.

I actually did exactly that, but just need to be able to dim them a bit more than the built in potentiometer allows.

I'm unable to PM you; I think you must need to have a certain number of posts before that's possible.

For you 944 S2 guys, based I what I see in post #279 in this thread, either the "AILD-1 connection kit for '90-'95 Porsche 928 (soldering required)" or the "AILD-1 connection kit for '90-'95 Porsche 928 (crimping required)" should work. If you're comfortable soldering, that first option makes for a cleaner, nicer installation.

There's more potentially useful information in post #168.

Default Question

In your experience-
Do most cars benefit from a unit which adjusts 50% up or 50% down?

The fade up or down configuration parameter is only for what it does at power-on. For 928s, the unit first sees power when you switch the parking or headlights on. At least on '89 and later (perhaps before that, too; I'm not sure), when the headlight switch is position 0 (head/parking lights off), the instrument cluster backlighting is on, so it makes most sense to fade down from 100% (since that's where the instrument cluster backlighting is starting from) to a level based on the rheostat setting. It's a very minor detail that really doesn't matter that much.

The "50%" you might be referring to is just what happens if the rheostat is or becomes disconnected. It just guards against the instrument cluster going dark if there's an unexpected wiring or connection problem.

There's no reason I can think of to select anything other than configuration "G1" for any model year 928.
