Default TB/WP and maybe Cam Gears

I was getting an intermittent toothed belt warning so I quit driving the car and ordered the parts for the TB/WP job. I could no where in the service records where the PO had changed the water pump and the timing belt had 20K on it.
I received the parts a few days ago from Roger (Thanks Roger) and read Dwayne's wirteup several times.
I began the job this morning and have the cam covers removed. Looking at the cam gears I suspect they need to be changed. With the knowledge on this board I hope someone will help on this one. These gears are quite expensive for a 1990 S4.
Are these gears shot?

Completely worn out.

Oil pump gear is likely in similar condition.

You mean you can only get 148K tops out of these things??? Geez, they're just 21 years old, just broken in good...
Yeah, I figured that but its good to get confirmation from you experts here.
So now I order more parts and continue on with the dissassembly. I just wish they were cheaper than they are.
Mr. Merlin, as I get these covers off I'll see about that crank gear too. Hope its a bit cheaper than the cam gears.
Thanks guys!

Yes, the rotors and distributor caps will be retired also. There are new hoses too
One thing about taking these cars apart, when they go back together you have a bunch of new parts (expenses) to go along with the original planned project.

I'll keep a close eye on this as I am a few weeks away from the same.

Ýou can feel OK about replacing gears at 144k I am at 83k and should really swap them out as the coating is starting to go.

Had to replace my cam and crank gears on the 88 with 80k miles on it. If the belt is over tightened it wears them out.
The car had a few WP and belt changes before i got it.

Actually, undertightened is what wears them out faster....the belt flopping around scrubs on the gears much more.
