There are some really cool cars shown in this thread. Congrats, all!
I went a different route and upgraded to a faster electric chair late last year. Now I take the 928 only when I want to go slow...

Seriously, they both represent my automotive dreams of different eras. The 928 was my dream car growing-up and well into adulthood. I still think it's the most beautiful car ever made as a production model. It makes me happy every time I see it.
But something changed after I test drove a Model S. I realized how outdated and unnecessarily complex ICE powered cars are, and how expensive they are to run. Once I got addicted to the torque, smoothness, low maintenance, and overall low operating cost of EVs, it became clear that I would not want to invest in any more ICE cars. Worked myself up through two other electric chairs before I found the perfect Model S for my needs, taste and budget. This one is almost exactly as I would have ordered it new - except it has a few cool options that I would have been too cheap to order. It popped-up at an independent dealer near my house in December, and begged me to take it home...
In case you don't believe my signature, here you can see that it is SUPERCHARGED:

Did I mention I love this thing as much as I loved my 928 20 years ago?
PS: I also had an early Model 3 for a short time. Pearl white with the upgraded wheels. Fantastic car, lots of fun. But I do prefer the S. Still, I was sad when the 3 left... wish I could have kept both Teslas. The 928 won!

As I own a GTS now, there is really nowhere else to go forward realtive to the 928 brand.
My car is now 17 years old.
Inevitably, the 928 will fall by the wayside just due to old age. So I've been thinking of what to get next - probably in the next few years.
I'm currently watching prices on previously owned Panamaras
and Audi R8s.
Any other suggestions on cars that come even close to the refinement of the 928 GTS?

Should be about a straight across trade? I tried to get my Mom to buy one but she ended up with a Toyota at three times the price. My Mom hasn't ever listened to me.

Then there's my other favorite (besides the Mercedes everyone has already raved about), the 1986 Porsche 930:
Factory slope nose in Anthracite Black. I may need to save one or more sheckles for that one .
The 930 is essentially a closely guarded death wish of mine (at least up until now). I know exactly how tail happy these cars are, but I can't get over the stunning good looks. Like Chocolate and Coffee Ice Cream, I know, deep in my soul, these will be bad for me, but I want one anyway. How sick is that?
Doesn't it just look like a killer whale waiting for you to toss it a salmon? Maybe a seal. I can't make the decision. It's an outrageously beautiful car, no doubt of that,

Well, I don't want to be rude. Really. I suppose there's a place in the world for folks who like the Panamera but I can only hope you don't move in next door to me . Maybe one of Noriega's Lieutenants? Ted Bundy? Sorry, I just can't abide the Panamera myself. I think I might prefer death by brain surgery.

Got to drive the Vanquish and Rapid. Both v12 and a noise to die for. The Teslas are quick but the noise makes me want to stick with petrol.
My wife tried the Vantage v12 and loved it.
So yes we will get an Aston but need to thin out the Porsche fleet first.

First off, I get the AMG GT thing. Attaching a pic of my 928 next to one in the parking garage at work. They're like today's 928 IMO. (Considering corresponding improvements in everything from engines to suspension to modern construction)
My ambition is to own my current 928 and a Fiat 130 Coupe. If this one had been a manual, I might have considered selling the 928 to cover it. I know it's sacrilege and all, but it's on my bucket list.
Flame away. I'd buy the 130 for the same reason I bought the 928: it's unusual, beautiful, and i just dig
GT cars.

Back when I was more of a corporate sort of person we had focus groups on "core competence". I have a feeling Porsche has lost track of its core competence with the Panamera and Cayenne lines. It's hard, since dyed in the wool 911 enthusiasts felt the same way about the first water cooled cars of the 70's and 80's, but I feel Porsche retained the aesthetic, and I can't see it in their most recent endeavors.
All things pass, I have my cars and another generation will no doubt have theirs, even if I don't appreciate them.

A Companion for the 928
There is no doubt that the body style of the series 1 (970) Panameras could have been better, especially regarding the treatment of the rear end. That's a major consideration for many would-be owners, but the Panamera does have several things going for it which would probably interest anyone looking for a true grand touring machine. It's a great road car (much in the spirit of the 928), with great performance and comfort wrapped into one. The 928 influence inside the car and on the road is unmistakable.
When it came time to replace the 996 Turbo daily driver after nine years, I took a long look at the series 1 Panameras and found one that suited my needs, a 2014 GTS with all the options. Having driven several Panamera models in the past, I knew that I'd probably get one some day. That day came, and so far, I couldn't be happier. It may not be for everyone, and the newer 971 series 2 Pamameras are certainly better looking, but this particular one does it for me at this point in time.

The 928 is a GT car of epic background. It actually appeared on course at Le Mans, something I don't think a Panamera will ever do. It was called "the best GT ever built" by Car and Driver back when it was released.
If you want to see the true successor of the 928, you'll need to switch marques to Mercedes.
