Why is it that I can have a '03 Ford Expedition with 111k miles on it and numerous other cars in my past where i have NEVER had to replace a CV boot. Now one is split on my car in not even 30k miles?

ugh...Axle nut...bearing grease. Not looking fwd to it.

Is there a "high quality" boot available?

Boots on a 2003 are only 8 years old...the 928, if original, are 24 years old.

Who was the manufacturer and supplier for the ones your replacing? Could be you bought some that had already exceeded there shelf life.

Quantity of grease supplied is twice what's required per joint (see WSM).

Pelican seems to have the best price per kit.

Regardless of which ones you buy, check them carefully for molding defects before installing them.

I'm with Tony on this. 928's seem to eat the damn things, I've had to replace mine twice and now have another ripped one.

My 220K mile Miata has never, ever had one ripped/replaced and believe me, it leads a much harder life than the 928.

usually the failures are caused by heat from the exhaust pipes,
too much sitting still with the engine running

I just bought a full set as I noticed mine were cracking, but not split yet. Just a matter of time. Done it a before on a couple other 928's and it is a dirty messy job.

There's your answer. You let the car sit so long the boots got set in one position and cracked when you drove the car.

my 140k mileage 928 racer WHEN THE ODO broke, prior to 55 hours on track use....had just fine axle boots....they still are fine??

BUT when I owned Sharky, both boots were rebuilt when I bought it...but 3 years later were weeping...... I dunno

I got this kit from Roger for my S4, but I needed one for my '79 first and it went right on, fit fine.

eh..i dunno..the angle of deflection of the axle really isnt that much as the car sits there. Still really no excuse....comes down to the compound in the rubber. The axles are under more defelction when the car is on jackstands actually.
can i JB weld them?

When I was a lad...... CV boots would last a lifetime. In todays throw away society etc etc...

Strange one this - I've noticed over my 11 years of 928 ownership and being on Renn and other lists that the people that post about changing boots once post about it again a few years later.

Both my 90GT and 88 SE are both on their original boots and afaik don't have cracks in them.
