Sounds like you're close! Was there at least a paint stripe or mark across the flywheel and PP that indicated some attempt at balancing and orientation for assembly?

It is utterly going to change the way you drive the car.

Nope, but it was kind of pieced together from used parts on the clutch and flywheel.

The roads were more than a little slick today, so it is hard to tell how it is going t perform, but it sure feels better, the throttle response is much better, and the sound, just no comparison to the sounds of a 5 speed shifting.

You think you'll be able to drive it to Roswell Saturday? I'd like to see the results of all of your hard work. I'll bring you the old tensioners if you're going to be there.

Ya Mike, the vibration wont keep me from making it, it seems to be worse under 2500, no long trips until I get it done, but I do plan to be there with a couple of other 928's.

Greg, as you probably know, you want them to balance the flywheel alone first, then add the intermediate plate and balance that, then the add the pressure plate- that way, all components are neutral balanced and won't matter if you mix-and-match later...the discs should be checked by themselves, and really should not need much correction....

I just talked to my machine shop guy, he said that they would do what ever needs to be done.

Don't forget the starter ring. That's where most of the imbalance was on my DD setup. It didn't have much vibration to begin with but after this work it was noticeably smoother.

Had it balanced to 0.1G, essentially as Steve described but the plates were not balanced. The FW was ground before balancing, new IP & PP. The parts were generally within 1-2g but the starter ring was out by about 10g!

Got a couple of more issues done, it will now start in any gear and the reverse lights work, but I suspect the reverse lights are not going to work when I change the pod out next week.
I will deal with that when I get there.

i plan to pull the clutch assembly out and try to have the flywheel match balanced with the old auto flywheel and we will see what we have then as far as the imbalance issue goes.

It really changed the way the car accelerates, it will break the tires loose at will in first and most of second with the 295's on it, I was not expecting that much of a difference in overall acceleration.

I let Paul Hunt drive it today and he said it is going to just walk away from his now, they used to be pretty even, I feel the same way, gonna spank him and Spike out on the highway now.

I am going to wait on changing the condenser until this summer and do a full o-ring refresh and install the rear ac unit.

Great job. The 5-speeds are faster until you have to shift... then you lose ground.

Hi Greg,

Congratulations on getting this done! Makes you wonder why there are so many 928 automatics out there and not more 5 Speeds.

Good luck with tracing down the vibes, hope it isn't the TT...!

Kind regards,

Yep, and I am not a fast gear shifter and these trans are not really made for speed shifting.

Oh, and my once every other two months idle problem came back today, pissed me right off.
I have replaced the injectors, the MAF(twice) the TPS (twice) the LH (twice) the o2 sensor, all the harness ends on the engine, cleaned all grounds (twice), replaced the engine grounds and it will be fine for a while after doing a reset on the LH and let it adapt again.

It happens so little it makes trying to figure it out hard.
