Fabio,
Thanks for checking in.
I'm trying to clear some smaller projects to make room for this one, again.

Herr Carlos has taken up the postion of lead design, because he knows phone dials better than most, if not anyone.

I've taken the postition of CAD design and vendor procurement.

The latter has been slow going.
On that note, if anyone has a good lead for a wheel company the specializes in forged "monoblock" 3-piece wheels,
feel free to post them up here.

What's your timeframe, Fabio?

Try CCW in Daytona Beach, FL. www.ccwheel.com

Regarding timeframe, I really don't know. At least a couple months. If it stretches out I have a wide set of wheels I can pull off of my other widebody.

Thanks for the CCW lead. Talked to John there. Though a bit of a primadonna, he seems the have 928 specific knowledge. He says 8" backspacing is necessary. Didn't seem very interested a 928 project, let along anything I had to say. Next!

Hmm, sorry about that. To me, it really isn't a "928 project" as far as I can tell. It is a Porsche project. According to these guys, they were also offered on 911's, 944's and 951's. If I were you, I would sell it as a Porsche wheel project. These guys make custome forged wheels.

These folks are also in the custom wheel manufacturing business.
Good luck.

I read ya, man, and I do. I didn't have a chance to say much of anything.

I'm usually more drawn to people with a sense of geniune curiosity.
For me, when a new client comes in, I sit back and listen, and ask lots of questions.

Anywho, thanks for the links. Will keep you posted.
FWIW, figure having $4k in the bank for a one-off set. And that is with me not getting paid. Not to say that I am looking to get paid, just sayin'.

Ultimately, would like to get the cost down, but have a LONG way to go there.

Jim, I know I am overdue to get back to you. I've measured the heck out of one set of Phone Dials, but need to put those measurments on a wheel background.

I've got two other Phone Dials sitting in front of me, waiting to get measured. It is on my to-do, and I am trying to get to them.

I also have the CAD drawings and reader, and will use those to point out some changes to try.

Shawn, thank you for reviving the thread - it will help prompt me to get to this sooner!

Carlos,
You are just fine doin' what you are doing for now.
Let me get the feasilbiliy to a higher level before we really dig in and finalize the design.

Right now, I have drawings out, in search of forged blanks to use as a base for machining.

Here's what I have right now in terms of size and offsets:
Front 18x8.5 et70 (7.5" backspacing)
Rear 18x10 et50 (7.5" backspacing)

What does everyone think?

I think your drawings show a serious lack of understanding about automobile wheels. How do you expect anyone could mount a tire on a wheel made like the ones in you drawings? The bead on a tire is not intended to stretch, so the wheel has to have a recess all around it for the bead to fall into while being mounted. Then the center of the wheel gets fastened to that narrower diameter part of the rim, so the wheel center gets to be smaller.

^^^^^
Jerry,
You need to get caught up on the thread.
See, I'm still searching for vendors to supply raw materials, which means I'm still at a VERY PRELIMINARY feasibility stage. There is no need to put that level of detail into this design until we've passed thru that gate.

Forged Wheel Blanks:

http://www.smw.com/ <---

http://www.aluminumprecision.com/cap...forged-wheels/ <--- These guys make wheel blanks and finsihed wheels for Porsche, Mercedes, RUF, etc. Maybe $$$$

http://www.azaforged.com/ <---- these guys are in the USA and machine 3 piece forged wheels in house.

http://www.steelforge.com/aluminumalloys.htm <--- Produce 6061 T6 discs. I'm not sure about the minimum order.

What would your required dimensions and specs be for these centers? My company buys aluminum discs in 22 1/2 " , 25" and 30" sizes but they are all 1/2" thick. I could speak with my purchasing dept. to see if they have any sources for what you need. Let me know.

Default A little background about me...

Not that I feel a strong desire to validate myself...I will lead by saying I have never designed an automotive wheel.

I have 14 years in meachanical design and product development.
I'm a mechanical designer, or design engineer, but sometimes "act" like an engineer, industrial designer, or graphic artist.
Currently work for SPARK Engineering. Been here for the past 5 years.
Past companies include Stryker Corp, Eaton Corp, and General Dynamics.

I had a bit of experience in billet motorcycle wheel design, working in conjuction with MM Billetworks. Here's a few examples:

Wow! Those are some sweet wheels. I'd like to put those spikey wheels on my car. That would be so Ben Hurr.
