Maybe it's the straight on view, but that phone dial looks a bit different than the other renderings?... The distance of the face of the wheel from the outer edge of the rim is a key part of the phone dial "look"... Is there a way to keep that "look"..maybe adding more meat to the mounting part (lug area)...so the offset can work with the 9" width?

sorry if I missed the post but is there an estimated price for a set?

I read what you are saying. The original PD wheel is a really deep design... and the face of the wheel is proud of the outer rim lip. Proved to be very difficult to apply this into a modern fitment, esp for the 10" rear.
Not only that, be the deeper lip design is more modern. The wheel center design still has that "shaped depth", it's just done inset from the rim lip. What I'm hoping is it will create a shadowed effect that will make the main contours and shapes of the wheel POP.
The last rendering is with the change to 9" width. Best outcome of this change is how well the front and rear insets are balanced.

It was a real challenge altogether to give serious respect to the original PD, update it's size, and make it modern.
I'm hoping my lead designer will chime in to share his thoughts on how we came to the current design.

Maybe a small 3/16" to 1/4" radius flare into the rim would help that. It would take some attention away from the joint itself.

Or not. A lot of critics in this thread already.

Don't get me wrong.. I still like the new renderings and they've done a hell of a job getting it to this point ..but if there's a chance to keep it as close to the original..now's the time .. Either way..I'd be in for a set (eventually)...

I think Tom is talking about depth. How deep, shallow, proud is the wheel center with respect to rim lip. Inset.

What you are referring to, I believe, is how the wheel center transition into the rim, at the outer diameter. There is a 3/8" radius there, mainly for easy of cleaning. Hard to see it in these conceptual renderings.

I'm cool with the critics... all very positively critical.

First of all, we welcome the feedback! The design in the straight on view of Jim’s latest rendering did change slightly - mainly in the final shape of the ovals and in the final scale of the ovals - but the change was not directly due to the new 9 inch offset. So the good news is that the 9 inch offset is not competing with us here any more than the other offsets we considered.

As Jim indicated, it was a challenge to come up with the final design, and we did have to make some necessary compromises. We believe we made the right ones for keeping the “look” as much as possible, but we certainly may have missed something.

The constraints we were challenged with included:

• The 5x130 Porsche lug circle (and center cap) had to be maintained, despite the rest of the wheel “scaling up” to 18 inches.
• The center plate used was relatively thinner in scale, compared to scaling up the body of a 928 Phone Dial. The thinner plate was necessary to keep weight within what we thought was reasonable.
• The modern rim being used is not a scaled up version of a stock 928 Phone Dial rim (with its stock thick surround).

Because of these constraints, we had our work cut out for us in maintaining the Phone Dial “look” in this new wheel. We considered the following for maintaining that look:

• The asymmetric view (most common view)
• The straight on view (typically the marketing view (and my personal favorite))
• The scaling up factor for each scalable component (including the ovals)
• The shape of the front (facing) ovals
• The shape of the rear (brake side) ovals
• The surrounding bevel between the front and rear ovals
• The face view of the bevels
• The asymmetric “tricks” that these bevels play
• The space between the rim and the ovals
• The “spokes” between the ovals (affectionately referred to as “the cleavage”)
• The “hood”/blister/boob which rises from the outer perimeter to meet up with the rim side of the oval
• The angle of the face that the Ovals sit on
• The angle of the face that the lug holes sit on
• The distance between the ovals and the lug holes

We learned some things along the way about the Phone Dial wheel, including a couple of nice optical tricks, one of which was throwing us off track until we (actually, Jim) realized we were under its influence!

These are the things I can remember readily (and am willing to reveal ).

Extra pairs of eyes (to our currently tired ones) are certainly welcome! However, we now have it to the best point we thought we could get it within the timeframe we needed, and the first prototype is now on its way to being made, from the design you see in the latest face view.

Once we get that actual wheel, we can take a look at it in person, and tweak further if needed and possible! We are looking forward to seeing this beast in person!

It was also interesting to see the variety that existed among Porsche Phone Dial wheels. Note the subtle differences in these - all found on OEM Porsche cars.

The 928 version of the 16 inch phone dial (last two pictures only) actually differred from most of the others, and seemed more refined and sophisticated. The "hood" (boob) was more shapely and smoother in a good way, and the overall blending into the base was more subtle than all but the 924 15 inch wheel (3rd picture).

Best wheels ever.

This is very exciting, to have a modern equivalent.

Thank you Jadz!

I could never quite explain why I liked the PDs until I heard all this talk about ***** and cleavage. Now it all makes sense!

Great work!!

Yes, it seems we have some Universal design communication going here

As they say, "the proof is in the pudding". However, I'm not sure who they are.
All I know is I can't wait to see how these look on an OB and S4!

I think Carlos summed up our challenges very well. At least 13 concepts and/or refinements were scrutinized. Over a hundred versions of the model were developed. Hours were spent discussing and understanding the ovals alone. I'm not sure I've yet to understand them!

Carlos is tuned into these Phone Dials like none other. I couldn't have done it without him. A serious and heartfelt thank you from me to you, Man.

The whole "cleavage thing" was a real kick! I'd tell you about it, but it's NSW.
All I can tell you is the research was great.

Didn't know Carlos was working with you on these Jim! He's probably pretty well versed in them considering he runs them on both of his '86.5s!
