do my extention rotor plan for the S body to use the 330mm rotors and slap on some pagid black racing pads and you are good for the season!
Well, to use a Kibortism... "now remember..." I said track car, not race car. I don't need more power. I need steel ball joints, enroute; brakes, check; suspension, good enough to start next month; tires; some exhaust swappping, and as many laps as possible. Then maybe next year we say race car.

I was checking on the RX8 time you posted. yes, it was 202, but that was a grand am race car.

also, this track is the bypass, and it looks like all the times are about 3-4 seconds faster than they normally do on the "hill" configuration. Donna Gillio of Divaspeed, runs that honda. went to the runnoffs, etc. 2nd place, etc. she was running 2:01.xx and normally runs in the 2:04-5 range.
I noticed lots of spec e30s, and others in the 2:00 range, and they just never get close to that on the normal track config. Just a side note since times and models are being referenced.

I am the MASTER at the "budget" racer build!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here is the simple formula to turn your 79 into a clone of the Estate, but probably faster

1: Gut it to the bone (like Petty's)
2: Install Bilsteins with eibachs cut -1.5 coils all the way around (I used used bilstein-eibachs)
3: get Carls tow rear tow hook-drop link to stiffen the rear bar
4: S4 brake upgrade for the front with Raybestos ST43 pads, steel lines and good fluid (amsoil 580F)
I run Hawk black pads on the rear and the stock 55 bar bias bar
5: I would run Dunlop Direeza Star spec street tires for a while....great tires, cheap with plenty of grip and FAR more communicative than R comps (think easier to slide around and catch)..I have extras already mounted you can use..wider rims is a good idea, but not needed until you get much faster....I did pretty well on Sunday with 225/50-16 Star specs against Spec Miata's on R comps...

Bottom line.....if you take a nicely running 928.....invest $5k or less....you will have a SWEET 928 racer!!!!!

Mike
Listen to what Brian offers he is now way faster in his $256 car than he ever was in his $30,000 car

Excellent advice, all around. I have those monster brakes which are going on and they're just stock pads. No clue what track pads are like these days. At any rate, ton of brakes on hand. I have the 18" ciii's (8x,10x) and a set of 17" c2's (7.5x,9x) which I think I can get 245's on all around. Does cutting the eibachs get rid of the progressiveness or just make them stiffer to start? I'd like to start with something fairly neutral and similar to what I've been driving on the street all this time. Then it's tires... how fast do I want to spend? is pretty much it. Dunno, but they gotta squeal like a stuck pig for awhile before I move up to something faster.

Thanks for input gents. Now I gotta go see what I can sell to pay for tires...

Unfortunately this is SO true

My best lap ever in the Widow was 2:09.03...vs 2:09.8 in the -100whp, automatic open diff racer..here is a great side by side comparison of both laps....the sound of each car is on its corresponding side...so if you balance all left its the Estate...the widow is all right...

http://www.vimeo.com/15164600

At the time of the video I would say I had over $25k invested in the Widow....vs maybe $5k in the Estate......

The single biggest difference I noticed in the video was how easy the widow lap was...not even trying really....vs the Estate that clearly was being pushed hard....

You'll learn faster, by spending slower.

Gotta walk, before you can run...

Thats right...just take the brakes straight off your white car....PERFECT....Jeff can source the race pads for you...but at say 200whp....I would run the stock pads until they wear out......you have WAY more brake than you need even with street pads.....

I do think cutting -1.5 coils dumps most of the progressive...which you don't want for a race car anyway....I should have the springs tested to see how stiff they really are...since the highly inaccurate fender push test puts the Estate stiffer than the Widow, especially in back????

You have plenty of good wheels......245's all the way around is just fine for now....my R comps are 245/45-16 all around and handle great....sure in theory its under tired...but I'm happy with it........Just wear out what ever tires you have now...then go to the Dunlops..which are CHEAP....then make the jump to R comps..or you could borrow some of ours to test one day....

The single fastest way to improve your lap times is to improve your DRIVING...don't spend $$$ on whiz-bang go fast parts....BEEN THERE DONE THAT.....Keep the engine STOCK...run the OB pan, 3/8th spacer & amsoil...run a straight exhaust with headers....say 200whp-ish and spend your $$$$ on track time and instruction.....of course my advice is free and I can take you out in the Widow to show you how I like to drive....since the Estate only has 1 seat.....

With 5 years on track driving...the last 2 in "race" cars I still think I have TONS to learn....I think the Estate is getting near its potential....but still needs more suspension tuning & eventually aero mods to get all the way "there"....more power never hurts either

Bottom line is its all about having fun.......a broken race car is NO FUN....BTDT....

Speedtoys,

Here is a post from the "Turtle" Tom, (fast 911 with aero on big slicks) who has a car that has always been a tad faster than my "new" holbert car. 1.5g at turn8, 105mph. 1:56 over the top. (1:53-4ish if the bypass)
He says, maybe there is 2mph if he had the , xxx's. I see the same thing, albeit a little slower. 102mph. Ive hit 104-5, and barely was able to keep the drift on the track at the exit. Was a fastest lap as well. Thats on real nice DOT A series Hoosiers, HUGE ones too!

Dude...E0 WERC class is NOT a grand am race car?

WTF?

#80, MER racing, RX8...VERY close to stock...where is this grand am car??

And yes, bypass times...it does make a difference..but not for handing over a Franklin in T8, and not getting back change.

Maybe its the oil I use:
