CARLS SOLID ALLOY MOTOR MOUNTS
#62
I had solid mounts in my 76 dart with a 451 stroker in it. at idle the vibrations would whip the antenna ball right off the top of the antenna! but that K frame was a little bigger then the one we have in the 928.

Greg, I don't know you but you are way to valuable to put on ignore.
With your experience, I will always consider your opinions important.
I may not like it if you or someone else seems to be stepping on someone for a unknown reason. But from one mechanic to another I always go by the rule, suck it up princess and getter done.

I pretty much tell things like they are. I've been a Porsche only mechanic and owned my own shop for over 35 years. I've raced and built race cars for that entire time. I also work on street cars. I've seen more than a few parts "hacks/******" with "brilliant" ideas come and go, over these years. Trust me, there are very few people that had ads in the 1975 Panorama still in business....and none of those that are still left were ever anything but brutally honest offering quality products. The "hacks and ******" never seem to make it, very long.
Even seemingly "good ideas" can turn out to be bad, when making aftermarket parts.
Bad ideas are generally more obvious and they can be weeded out, by logic, in the beginning, before too many people get "burned".
I'm never sure why I even bother with Rennlist. I've got some great friends on here and have met some great people, which makes it worthwhile. However, after 35 years, it is very rare that I learn something here.
I think I'm to the point where I just want to try and share the knowledge that I have.
Can I be a sarcastic ***? Absolutely! Do I pick on people that I think are dishonest? Absolutely! Do I pick on people that I feel sell untested products? Absolutely! Do I hold people that I believe steal other's ideas and market them as their own in low esteem? Absolutely! Are there people out there that don't like me or my approach? Absolutely!
If I've got nothing of value, for you, you can always put me on "ignore". That will actually have very little effect on my day....

Mark this is so true that it can not be said enough.
Any car that is modified in one area will need to be modified in another, will need to be modified in another, will need to be modified in another.

I'm not going anywhere.
I figure the people that don't want to hear it can ignore it. I've got a small list of people that I ignore...I think it is all part of being on the internet.

I'd say most of us are glad Greg bothers to post here. Not many people have have as much to contribute. He seldom remarks on anything he doesn't have facts to back up his opinion, or he's already tried himself.
Its like a guy missing a finger, telling you not to stick your hand in the fan- you might want to take his advice, but you're free to go ahead chop one of yours off to prove a point....

To ignore the advice of an expert, no matter how blunt, is to prove oneself a fool.
In fact I get in trouble at work for giving advice similarly on a regular basis.
Making arrangements for volvo mounts now... Glad I need to replace the tie rods anyway, I won't feel quite as bad when I pull everything apart.

Vincent: A "please" would be nice.
The Wolf: Come again?
Vincent: I said a "please" would be nice.
The Wolf: Get it straight, Buster. I'm not here to say "please". I'm here to tell you what to do. And if self-preservation is an instinct you possess, you better StrekStrekStrekStreking do it and do it quick. I'm here to help. If my help's not appreciated, lots of luck, gentlemen.
Jules: No no, Mr. Wolfe, it's not like that. Your help is definitely appreciated.
Vincent: Look, Mr. Wolfe, I respect you. I just don't like people barking orders at me, that's all.
The Wolf: If I'm curt with you, it's because time is a factor. I think fast, I talk fast, and I need you two guys to act fast if you want to get out of this. So pretty please, with sugar on top, clean the StrekStrekStrekStreking car

Put in solid rubber mounts. Engine sat high. Intercooler wouldn't fit.
Replaced solid mounts with new Porsche hydraulic mounts. Intercooler once again fit properly.
Put in solid rack mounts. Steering more responsive but I didn't like the feel in the wheel.
Replaced entire rack. Steering just as responsive. Hands thanked me very much.
Sold solid engine mounts. Filled up the tank with what I got for them. Car was happy.
Still have solid rack mounts. Would sell cheap.
Need to clean out the shop. Wife would then be happy too.

From what we've done and the research we did along the way, hard mounting items in any car usually will lead to other problems later, some that won't be seen easily but can ruin your car or your day(s).
Weight and rubber is used in drive-lines to attenuate drive-line vibrations and make it easier and more comfortable to drive. Start taking weight and rubber away from key areas and the comfort and ease of driving goes away, along with the longevity of certain parts.
These types of modifications are usually done in race cars and Porsche does this to their factory built race cars. But these racers also have rebuild requirements measured in hours besides being designed for this use.
Usually aftermarket parts are used for an application due to them being cheaper, not always because they will work better than the OE part. The owner should be aware of the differences between the two parts and make their own judgement.
We are very fortunate to have individuals on this list who have had a lifetime of experience in this area and who can be called upon to offer their views on a whole range of topics about our 928s. What will work and is a good change and what should not be done or used for certain applications.
But ultimately it is the owners responsibility to make themselves aware of what they are putting in their cars. Just because something is cheaper for an application should not be the sole factor for buying and using a part.
I just wish these discussions could be kept at a higher level without getting into a personal bashing of certain individuals. No one is without fault in this arena.

By the way, the solid engine and rack mounts that I personaly didn't like, were not from Carl at 928 Motorsports.
I was just relating my experiances.
I don't know if all the vendors carry the same products.
Who knows, I may have just gotten bad ones.
It happens, not just in the automotive world, but in all areas of retail.

My respect for Greg Brown's Porsche knowledge and intellect is such that I recommend him to a team which needed some help with a major professional Porsche Racing Effort...... Greg is the real deal few realize how much real experience he has with Porsche race cars , he should write a book about it !!.
