I kind of think of it as an upside. If there's radio or other noise, you might not hear the hatch motor cycling. The panel illumination going off during the time that the hatch motor is cycling gives you a visual indication that it's occuring.
Are the different color LEDs cheaply and readily available if someone decided they wanted to change colors sometime in the future?

And yes, standard LEDs will work just fine.
The LEDs that we will supply with the kits are the ones favored by the fiber optic panel manufacturer because they are highly focused. But the color choice is limited: white, blue, red, green and amber. However, neither Hans or I were impressed with the performance of the amber. The others are very crisp and bright.
And as I noted earlier, one can use different colors at each end to achieve a very nice color transition effect.

Paul, when you said amber didn't perform well, what did you mean?
Since it'd be unlikely that I find LEDs in Coral Red, I'd want the sill light to match the rest of the cockpit as closely as possible - i.e. the dash and odo/trip computer backlighting. I mananged to find an older model Blaupunkt CD player that has a natural/amber backlight, so even that matches the rest.
Thanks for a great product!

I find the amber to be somewhat "washed out" compared to the other colors.
That makes it look less powerful, less brilliant.
I would be more than happy to send you one with the kit so you can judge by yourself.
An amber diffuser with a white LED might work better for you.

George,
I also have a car with a digital dash, and I find that the while lighting matches quite well with the rest of the dash lighting. I will be using white myself, both for the switches and the sills. It is possible that there is an LED out there that would match better - the panels accept the standard 5mm (T1-3/4) type LED. You can order a handful of different colors from Mouser, Newark, or Digikey and see what matches your interior the best if you would like. Usually, LEDs only run between $0.35 and $1.50 depending on the light output and color, so it wouldnt be an expensive experiment, just time consuming, and unfortunately for now, I dont have to the time to spearhead that experiment.
If you do find some that match, please share the part number with the rest of us.
Thanks
Hans

George,
I ordered several different amber LEDs today to test, just for you. While I was at it, I ordered some PINK ones too, maybe you can have matching illumination to your paint
I will post some pictures of the new amber options when I get them.

this is for the lighting kit that is to be used with your old sills.
The sills themselves are not included in the kit.
I will correct the original post to clarify it.
Thanks

Hans and I are working on the instructions.
Hans ordered the last bits we needed to make the wiring kits and the LEDs are also on their way.
The fiber optic panels are already in stock.
So I think that by the end of next week, the kits should be shipped.

This is probably the biggest "cool" thing I have wanted to do to my shark for appearance. Now, if I could just find a way to get that Lexus LFA dash to work in there. . . . .
