It actually looks fine upside down - bright enough, but I managed to scratch the backing in one spot and that shows as a brighter spot, so I'll turn it over (and swap to the other side of the car) which should take care of that.

Did this to the drivers side today. Worked out great!
Followed AO's sill plate removal write up so that was SUPER EASY! Thanks AO for writing that up! Really helped.
I plugged my lighted plate in to the hatch release so it was all right there and super easy to get to and plug in to.
It looks even better in person than in pics!
Thanks Paul and Hans...another great product! Now I have a non-broken sill plate that is also lit on EURO85 and I have the lighted switches in the '92 (plus a bunch of Paul's leather work in the 94, 92 and 88)! LOVE IT!

Hey guys,
there were talks a while back about adding some colored gels between the sill cover and the light panel in order to intensify the effect.
An eBay seller was mentioned by AO and we both ordered from the guy.
These are some rough tests of the red gel. By the way the seller calls them "gels" but think of the stuff as a thin, colored film.
This first picture shows the difference with no illumination between "no gel" and a "red gel":
This one shows the difference while the panel is lighted with red LEDs and in moderate ambient light:
This is still with red LEDs but in very low ambient light:
The pictures do not show as much difference as in real life. The colors in the pictures are off a bit. The red under the gel is a deep rich red.
This is how I received the gels:
So the packing could be improved. And the size offered is not quite enough for our purpose, but if there is a demand, we can certainly find something that will work.

My daughter actually clued me in on another way to handle this for red cars... I can't believe I didn't think of it myself.
We should be able to use the Testors Translucent Candy Apple Red paint that we use on the tail lights. Brilliant!
BTW, My gels arrived in perfect shape. I was worried about the size, but I think there;s enough to splice the seam in between the numbers.
My project for the weekend.

Dang it! Should have waited... I might need to redo my drivers side with the gel. I like that they still look red all the time with the gel and then even MORE RED when the lights are down!

In the event anyone has a problem with you hatch cycling endlessly after installing the sill kit, please check the yellow wire at the hatch motor. Mine fell out and it apparently is the ground. The motor is then grounded by the lights and you have to pull the power plug to get the motor to stop.

Finished mine this weekend and they look quite nice. Great product!
One time that saved me a bit of time... I found when I was trying to hide the wires I would accidentally pull the connectors off the LEDs. A little hot-melt glue worked great to hold things in place and ensure they won't come apart.

Did you use the gels?

What I have always envisioned is the whole plastic piece being polished aluminum, with the lighted 928 in the same place. Just a recreation of the pictures here, and the actual piece that bends over the sill, but in thin aluminum.

Sure did. Didn't have to splice either. If you cut them diagonally in half they'll fit just fine. Only issue is since the gel is not affixed it has a slight wrinkle to it. I thought about using spray adhesive to affix it, but was afraid the glue would yellow. So I just used some packing tape around the perimeter. It works, but not as good as I want.
If it becomes an issue, I'll go with the translucent candy apple red model paint.
I have pics at home and will try to post them tonight.

Can't wait to see your pics AO. I might go back and redo my drivers side...have not done the passenger side...waiting to see the results from your efforts.
