That's using EL strips, which are prone to failure and the ballast starts buzzing and overheating, which can damage your carpet, other wires, or start a fire. Fiber Optic is the way to go.

I have some EL installed in the sills that have been operational for >15 years so I'd say that is not accurate. I'd suggest anyone installing EL strips should laminate them and seal the wire entry with superglue, they live in a potentially very wet environment - then they seem very reliable. I see no reason to go with anything else... EL colors are pretty flexible
