Nice work. Been there done that!

It takes a lot of patience to get the engine bay torn down that far! But the bay looks fantastic all repainted and fresh, especially when the motor is completely re-sealed and placed back in!!

I didn't have enough cajones to remove the fuel lines (just moved them outta my way by loosening!!)... Reconnecting that rubber upper mount with 3 fuel lines to the firewall was a terrible pain in the ***.

The a/c lines are bronze, and they polish out beautiful.
The brake lines polish out nicely.

What color are you planning on painting the car?

Tahoe Blue. Going to get my paint samples this morning - hopefully it is matched correctly!
The hardest part of removing the lines under the car was bending some of the clip retaining tabs - some are very hard to get to.

Default Tahoe Blue!

Nice, Stan and I talked about that for my car, but I'm hardheaded! I like Arena!

I was going to mention... Where the drain is for the hvac box, there's that oval/squarish flapper gasket... up underneath of that check for rust and down by where the floorboards are spot welded together on the flange, mine had some very minor rust starting there from where the water running down and heat off the headers up underneath of the heat shielding.

I recognize some of those parts and boxes! Great project! You are just short of throwing that thing on a rotisserie and rebuilding it from top-to-bottom.

Thanks, I will check for rust in those areas. So far, not a hint of rust anywhere underneath - just a little cancer rust at the LH rear quarter window lower edge.
Got my sample today - it is beautiful!!! We are very happy with it, so end of next week I should have it in hand. Just need to get everything cleaned and prepped first....

There is a Ford Blue that is very close but a little more lively. Some of the metalics in the Porsche paint set are kind of muted. The Ford color stands up a little better and is very close to the Tahoe Blue.

I know this my be herasy but some of the German and British colors look like they were selected in the dark.

Well, finally got my color applied to the front wheel wells and engine bay! It has been a long road of cleaning, scrubbing, washing, and prepping for hours on end... But, it is so worth it - we love the color!! Still have to apply the clearcoat yet, but very pleased with the results already.
The pic of my "power brush" is my own invention (I think) - it is a cheap toilet brush with the handle cut off and stuck in the drill chuck. The bristles are stiff enough to get dry roaddirt off, and work well when using Simple Green cleaner to remove the oily patches from the various leaks in the car's previous life. It also has served me well for removing the cosmoline when used with brake cleaner, but I found that stuff was bad for my health - made me sick!
Once everything was cleaned, the original green paint showed ok, but since we wanted to change to Tahoe Blue, I prepped everything and sprayed 2 coats of primer. Then 2 coats of Tahoe Blue, to be followed by 2 coats of clear later. I have to wait for the cure time because the shop has limited heating and will take longer than normal.
Next to spray will be the rear wheel wells, just to cover the green that is showing, and finish cleaning the underside of the car. Once that is done, I can start putting things back in like battery cable, brake lines, trans cooling lines,....

Outstanding, that is how it's done! Love the power toilet brush, wish I'd thought of that while my engines were out...

If I'm the first responder to the 911 electrocution call, I'd have to snap a cellphone shot for the "Fail" photo blog.

I got very sick from using brake clean. End up with nose polyps and a very bad cough. Stay away from that stuff. Took some severe measures to get rid of this and a number of years to get better.

A clear coat should be applied as soon as the base coat is on. That is the only way to get a good bond. You can later apply a second clear - but the first should follow the base coat in a very short period.

I use Easy Off oven cleaner and sometimes a little heat to remove cosmoline. It melts it right of and can then be washed with water or simple green

Job is looking good. Great work.

How were you using it? A little cleaning or weeks of heavy cleaning? More info please because I have had lots of exposure to it? Gunar

It was my first time using brake clean spray, in a poorly ventilated shop, and it caused me breathing problems, nasty taste in my throat, tightness in my chest. I later found I could use it sparingly by not atomizing it so much - just lightly spraying onto a small brush, then scrubbing the surface, instead of going full out with the spray. This was only used during cleaning, no welding involved.

Brake clean is a very good cleaner for getting rid of grease. I did a stupid thing. I was looking for the source of an oil leak. The car was on the rack and the engine running. I had cleaned everything with brake clean - but the engine was warm. The garage door was open but obviously there was not enough ventilation. I did find the leak - front seal - aways do one with a timing belt.

So it was only one time. I used maybe a quarter of a can. It might have been the combination of the warm engine and the brake clean the the garage. My nose clogged that evening and never cleared again. I was later diagonised with nose ployps which the ENT tried to shrink with Veramist. The first application worked. Then they came back. Worse the Veramist precipiated asthma. This was treated with Provential (Abrutrol) which made me sicker. The ENT wanted to operate for the polyps but research showed that such operations are both dangerous and often are only effective for about six months. As one ENT told me polyps always come back.

I tried Homopathic treatments as well - none had a lasting impact. Finally I left the Homeopath and did my own research. The first treatment was Stanum 200C - it almost instantly cleared up the asthma. It got me off the Abuterol for a while but I developed a chronic cough - four or five attacks a day. Any activity triggered a coughing fit. Finally I went to a plumologist who put me on Advair which cured the cough. It was like instant. But the polyps remained. Those I finally treated with homeopathic Teucrium
I started with 6C three times a day for a week - the polyps went away for a couple weeks. A month later I followed up with 30 C once a day for three days. The polyps clearned up again and lasted for about three months. When they came back they were less severe. This was followed by 200C two days in a row. This cleared them for good. My nose is now clear and better than it ever was. I always had some sinus problems - now no more. Good or bad I now have a sense of smell - sometimes very intense. I have never had much a sense of smell.

The asthma was reoccurring and I used the ADVAIR off and on. That I finally cleared up with another try at the Stanum 200c two days in a row. Today my lungs and nose are clear. Of course after all that I got really sick and was out of service for another year - but that had nothing to do with the brake clean incident , but at least I could breathe.

I say stay away from brake clean. Today I pay people to do my cleaning and force them to wear a mask. No more chemicals for this old hacker.
