This digression began on the first page of posts. I haven't taken it anywhere. I have no comment on the picture posts (other than that pictures are generally a good thing
).

I rented a 350Z once. Very quick off the line, I was impressed by that, but the interior feels/looks cheap and I just didn't feel comfortable in it. Harsh ride on the freeway. The 928 is a cruiser. It's fine around town but the steering is really heavy for parking lots. You'll enjoy a 928 most on the freeway - merging and cruising. It's not a smooth-smooth freeway ride bc it is after all a sportscar, but it's smooth enough and I like the feel of the rear end on the freeway bc you feel the bumps just enough to know you have control over them. Easy to enjoy a freeway drive bc the 928 just "sits" on the road. $15K should get you a nice sorted out S4. Mine is an '87 and if I were to sell it, $12K would be a fair price. The extra $3K would take care of the AC and the other minor things that I've never gotten around to fixing. Mine just turned 100,000 miles (I got video of it thanks to the iPhone!) and it shifts much smoother than my 2002 truck. After 9 years of ownership, the last 7 have been a once a year oil change/general maintenance. It's never left me stranded, drove it from San Fran to Vegas and LA twice. A one hour trip in the car just warms it up.

Me too in Seattle at the airport..what the heck.
Nice car..but..I couldnt own it, for the same reasons..as much as I enjoy the MK3 supra, I could -never- own a MK4TT supra.
Its japanese utilitarian in the materials used...with some sort of crappy edgy fighter-jet layout that just doesnt work.
I have a co-worker, who would most likely put it to me like this..cuz we share the same tastes..and he's made this statement comparing cars before..
"The 928 is about the blo*j*b, the 350Z, is about the hairplugs..you want people thinkin you got a blow**b, or you got hairplugs at your age?

Having driven both, they are two very different cars.
I found that 350Z had a decent kick off the line, but once at 3500RPM it completely ran out of juice.
The 928 has slightly more kick off the line (IMO), and just keeps getting better as the RPMs climb...
A good 928, with an owner who looks after the maintenance will almost never be in the shop.
And a 944 will always have for more problems and higher maintenance than the 928.
The 928 timing belt service, 60k miles (factory),
944 timing belt service, 30k miles.
The 944 also has more than double the required parts to replace due to the balance shaft belt.

Maybe I can try to close out this wild and wooly thread by just saying I've decided I've been overanalyzing the whole subject. I've had my 944 for 11 years and always loved her, but when I bought it I had no idea what I was doing and did not overanalyze. I just jumped in and figured out pretty quick that it was going to be a sometimes demanding and very expensive car. So I kept her! I'm just going to do what feels right at the time, and with any luck I will be getting another 928 soon.

don't get a 350z. the mentalilty that goes with most of the owners is almost ricer. don't get me wrong they are good gt/sporty cars, but all out not a sports car, my 1992 DODGE STEALTH TT put one to shame. i can drive as was the z's owner. but it just lacked something in comparison, and it's something i see everyday. i've found most the owners to be cocky/immature. the guy i raced said his car was 20yrs newer therefore better...he forgot about my awd and sheer technology in it.
actually a stealth TT can be had for 8km, and with 1k(tune up) be very reliable. spend another 2 or 3k and it'll be reliable and close to 400hp. it's also a very good luxury car. power seats, auto climate, heated side mirrors, 5spd or 6spd manual, awd, aws, good hatch space, and somewhat usable rear seats(think 911) they do fold down, the forums(3si and 3Sgto) are passionate people that know everything about em. basic maitanence is cheap. even a clutch is just 800 installed. colors make the porsche selection look boring(not the names, just the colors), gas milage, if you care, is 26hwy, 19cty. its sporty and not that common anymore.

A friend of mine had 2 or 3 of those Mitsu twins and he ran them at the track all the time! Pretty fast, but not as fast as my 928 S4, but that might have been more driver than car I am thinking...

I remember wanting a Mitsu/Dodge back when I bought my 944. Today, however, they look so nineties and dated. Is the engine long-lasting? I had a crappy Dodge Daytona 4 cyl once upon a time, and the valve train wore out in like 30K miles. Disgusting motor. I never want another Dodge after that thing.

The 3S is a good platform..just feed it transmissions every 60k.
We used to have a solid contingent of HPDE'ers here in Norcal in the early 2000s, but that got _expensive_ for all involved pretty quick. Many never really rebuilt back to former glory.
3800lbs of AWD depleted uranium hot-asphalt tearing muscle...to a point. Wife and I have had..tween us..5 of em. Last one left us in 2002.

But it seems from numerous other posts that the 928 has far more electronic niggles going wrong all the time. The old 944 electronics are very minimal, and the electrical circuitry and fuses seem very robust. No one has so much as looked in my 944's fusebox for 11 years and 100K miles.
When you're out there looking at 928's do not ignore anything, pay attention to the ground points, look for leaks, look for other maintenance areas like fluids etc.
Something else I have noticed with many 928's is that many dealers and PO's will repaint or redo interiors to cover up true mileage. If you're going to pay a premium for a lower mileage car make sure it includes maintenance records to document the mileage.
Good luck, you won't regret the 928 purchase once you've spent some time behind the wheel.
