I watched a (new?) Top Gear episode that I had DVRed two nights ago and the test driver took the new Veyron Super Sport up to 267mph I think was his two run average! UNREAL! NEARLY 100 mph faster than that S4's top speed! WOW!

You know locked in some dark room in the back of the engineering quarters of VW is some twisted individual working on the 300mph body kit.

It's the German way

That speed is amazing, but you have to have a pit stop every 15 minutes to gas up and change tires at those speeds. And the tires aren't cheap, $38K US.

I seem to remember several years ago, just after the McLaren F1 hit the streets most of the main stream sports car manufacturers agreed not to try to go over 200mph top speed.

Remember that deep, dark engineering room I spoke about? Moments after that agreement was made, the VW execs could hear screaming from that room:

"Nein.....f*ck them!!!!"

I think what he means is that you could not just go out and buy an Enzo, and it was not only because there was not enough supply. It was similar with the F50, in order to buy one you *had* to have bought an F40 in the past.

Oh, and btw, a Dauer 962 is also a "production" car

Faster than the later 350z of 2007-2008? The VQ35HE motor which was before those years is slower when compared to the 928 with only 300HP. I lost to my friend's Nismo 350Z with the VQ35HR by at LEAST a car length, and I have an auto while he has a manual. An HR motor 350Z has a 0-60 of 5.1secs versus an early S4 manual's 5.5.

The real problem with really fast cars is tire technology and road/track conditions. Ask anyone that does the Postal Runs or that wants to do speed runs on the salt flats. Tires are just not designed for those speeds.

Modern tires are still amazing. I remember when I was a kid my dad always bought new tires before we went on vacation and we still got at least one flat. One of the reasons Michelins became so popular is they were one of the first tires that you could take on vacation and NOT get a flat

Exclusivity still doesn't magically make a car "non-production".

A lot of that is marketing BS anyway to help prevent car scalpers that shot the price of the F40 over $1 million in the blink of an eye.

The owners of the Ferrari dealerships qualify as one of the exclusive buyers. Guess where the car ends up? Yup, on their showroom with a window sticker, ready for the first person with the right size checkbook to walk through the door.

This all reminds me of the BS tales of a 4-5 year waiting list to get a new Countach. Is that way a dealership in Kansas City had two brand new Countach's on the lot?
Harley Davidson tries this all the time, claiming you have to wait over a year to order a bike. Yea, ok......

Yes there are cars like the FXX that have a more exclusive buyers list, as they should.

As far as I know, up to '08 there were 3 different engines on the 350Z:

306hp @ 6800
268lb.ft @ 5200

300hp @ 6400
260lb.ft @ 4800

287hp @ 6200
274lb.ft @ 4800

A guy that lived in my neighborhood had a brand new 2007 350Z coupe. All 350Z's in '07 had the same 306hp engine. We tried a bunch of times, I was always able to pull on him with my stock '86 5-speed. You have to remember that 32-valve 928's usually put down more power than they were rated for. A healthy early 32-valve puts down ~260rwhp and a good S4 puts down ~275rwhp on a dynojet. Stock Nismos put down around 250 - 260rwhp dynojet.

Yeah, to tell you the truth I don't know if those exclusive buying claims were true of false. The only way to know would be to have enough money to be able to afford one and to try to buy

Does it bother you that I like to drive fast cars fast and you don't? Are you one of those guys that drives a 170mph sports car 45mph in the fast lane on the highway?

Than my buddy must be lying when he said all he has is an aftermarket intake and exhaust. That car pulled like it had much more under there from me. I don't know if the excuse 'because it's automatic' flies with me anymore.
