Try a different oil for the notchiness. Redline 75/90 NS made a difference for me.

I'm definitely going to give the Redline a try during my next fluid change interval, it seems to be the preferred oil for the 928 gearboxes.

Having said that I don't think its gearbox wear that is the problem. I can still shift with a couple of fingers and shifting isn't difficult. I've also tried shifting several well cared for 928's and they all feel about the same with the short shifter installed.

Afshin,

With something like a manual transmission in the 928, you really do want a positive and direct feel imho.
This shows positive engagement, and strength.

Ok I'm starting to get the hint. Took me a while though.

Red Line Manual Transmission Fluid 75W 90 NS GL-5
Been selling a lot if this lately. $11.75 a quart.

After driving two cars with the "Lizard Shifter" long enough to get used to the shift it was awesome.
Exactly how the car should have been from the factory. Felt notchy to strat with but once you know where to aim the shift it became smoother.
Definitly an improvement on the worst gearbox known to mankind.

Ah yea right ...."Definitly an improvement on the worst gearbox known to mankind. " even a bad 5 speed is so much better than the best automatic You just need to learn how to best operate three pedals with two feet while driving with one hand and shifting with the other!

Thanks.
Last night I noticed the arm off the front shift ball on my engineless 82 S Euro. Can I just take the bell housing back off of the torque tube to replace the cup bushing and connect to ball or should I remove the heat shield to access. Thanks- Gunar

Redline 75W-90NS is excellent stuff. It cured quite a bit of heat-induced crunching on the race car. We still need a trans cooler, but the improvement was huge over standard Mobil-1 and Mobilube SHC.

I have not shifted Roger's kit, but what I do know is that replaceing the factory front ball cup is a temporary fix that will last you another 40K miles or so and then you will have to do it again. And it will be just as miserable the next time. You can put in Carl's steel front cup, but I just did that with the motor out of the car and it was a miserable install that required me to buy special tools in the end. And that was with the motor out of the car. So, I think this, plus the glowing reports of the shifting performance really point towards Roger's kit.

Why was it miserable to install with the engine out of the car? Can't you just unbolt the transmission, remove the 4 bolts that attach the TT to the bellhousing, remove the front shaft coupler, then push the transmission back and tilt the transmission/TT assembly down? There should be more than enough room to work on the ball cup then. Of course, you have to remove the exhaust and heat shields...

I have a short shifter in the GTS, does anyone notice that the shifter boot gets in the way when you shift down into 1st and 3rd? Because the **** is much lower, the extra leather tends to get bunched and pinched... any ideas short of getting a new "trimmed" shifter boot?
