Default New front ball shift cup replacement or short shifter upgrade?

While I was sorting out some issues with my clutch I looked up and it appears the the front shift ball cup bushing is gone!

I have the stock long shift lever. Question is do I go through what looks to be a PITA to pull down the heat shield and replace the bushing or just go ahead and install a short shifter from Roger that appears to disconnect and not use the front shift linkage?

Thanks.

Default The "Roger Box" is out the short shifter is in!!!

I had Roger drive mine with the short shifter last week he said "this is the way they should have come from the factory now I want one too"

The Roger Box is history

I've driven both and do like the performance of the new system.
The kit itself is marginal from an installation perspective. Could be improved.
But its very functional.

Why not sort the car further and add that later?

For me, I prefer that original early long shifter set up.

I will trade my short shifter (just the shifter itself) for an original long one and $20.

Take the trade and replace the bushing at the same time. I have a DEVEK shifter in my car and I love it. It changes the throw and feels really good. I'm still running the stock rear coupler, or will be when I'm done with my work today.

Don't remember the cost, but it is really the way to go. You will have to unsure the rear couple is in good shape, or new when you install it.

I've tried all three shifters and here is my take.

I currently have a short shifter and although I like it alot I really don't like how notchy it is. It isn't as smooth and requires a little more effort to shift.

I've had a regularly shift in my S4 which was very smooth shifting but the throws were really really long which just felt very old fashioned and unsporting.

I've shifted Rogers shifter in Jim's car and I really liked how direct it was and how short the shifter throws were. It felt like a Honda S2000 shifter with one big exception, it wasn't as smooth.

It would be nice if someone took the time to engineer the regular short shifter so it was smoother. This would be absolutely perfect in my book and I would buy one in a heartbeat.

I may also consider trading my short shifter for a GT shifter if anyone is interested. I would want the bushings and springs. PM me if interested.

FOR REAL?!

This deserves a completely new thread. Seriously.

On topic thread content: I'll be getting one of the short shifters one of these days.

Afshin,

The new short shifter I made, and is being sold through Roger, is yes much more direct.
And yes it requires that the bushings in the back be in very good condition.
However the ability to make it smoother is simply not possible. This feeling you get comes directly from the transmission.
The S2000 or newer high performance cars have very different syncro engagements and this is where the difference in feel is.

The stage III shifter though is proper suited to a high performance super car, such as the 928.

Colin,

I know you have far more experience than I regarding shifters and mechanicals in general. Is there any potential for making the original short shifter with smoother actuation? The stock shifter is very smooth and glides into gear and this feeling disappears with the short shifter. Are they any modifications that can be made to the short shifter to make it smoother?

I know I'm being picky but I also know that others have expressed similar interest.

Afshin,
The smoothness you are feeling is actually a lack of connection.

In order to get more smoothness for engaging gears with the short shifter it can be done by making a new shift rod. But it will not be a cheap modification.

Afshin, the short shifter reduces your leverage to move the selector shaft, so you feel every little notch and catch in the movement. As Colin says, this is due to trans internals and the way to address it is to work on those internals.

FWIW I'm getting very smooth and crisp shifting with my rebuilt early gearbox, new rear coupler, Motorsports steel front ball cup, and short shifter with new bushings. It's very tight with very little play.
