Dan,
You ARE the voice of reason. All very good points and well taken, too. Thanks for bringing me back to Earth. I find it very hard to have any regard for people who do not respect other people's property. Just my nature, I guess, but I've had to work hard all my life for the things that I do have, so when someone disrespects others or their things , it affects me.

Sorry to hear about the car, but its good you caught him.

Isn't Georgia the state with the township that mandates every homeowner be armed? Sounded like it worked very, very well.

When he was chased down by my two friends who ran up with guns drawn screaming at him to get out of the car he thought he was being carjacked and shot them both dead as they were trying to drag him out of his car. Three lives ruined and the families left behind.

I truly am glad things worked for you. You were a very very lucky fellow today.

+1, Dan. I understand what Greg did and I'm glad the runner got cuffed and stuffed. More glad nobody got shot or worse. There's a lot of luck involved when things start to happen, don't know if I'd have done all Greg did. I do know I don't think what happened was worth killing or being killed for.

And on first thought I don't think the survivor in Dan's story should have done any homicide time. Hmmmm ....... felony DUI makes for felony murder, maybe? Lotta lives down the drain on that one. Too bad.

I'm curious about what happened when the cops got there. I once waited a few hours in an open room at the cop shop, ~4-7 am, to talk about a shooting. I lost track of how many suits and uniforms stuck their heads in to give me an attaboy for "bagging a burglar." Took a couple months to get my weapon back - until the thief's criminal proceedings were over.

Cops love dudes that work to stop criminals. Judges, eh, not so much.

Convicted on two counts of manslaughter. It has been so long ago I can't remember the original charges. Of course all the DUI multipliers came into play. None of these weapons were registered nor were any cleared to carry. It was in East L.A. in the mid 70's. Unregistered guns everywhere. In this case three good guys, not the idiot gang members that ran rampant there, paid a tragic price.

The notion that when everyone carries a gun things are more civil is probably true in places that are generally civil to begin with. I can tell you 80% of the population in my neighborhood carried and held loaded weapons in their homes. There was a whole lot of gunplay and consequences of it. Can't say if there would have been more if less people had guns back then. I do know most burglaries were about getting more guns and maybe a little cash. Guns were power for those who had them. Different world than most places where people live.

Sorry it happened, glad it didn't turn out worse.

I am a firm believer in the 2nd amendment, but when I'm really mad I don't have a bit of sense, so I don't think a carried weapon would be a good idea for me, just that it should be MY choice.

Hope the repairs turn out well, I'm still PO over the guy that backed into mine 3 months after I bought it, got out and looked at the damage, got back in his truck and left. All on surveillance video, but the sun came out from behind a cloud just before it happened and the camera iris closed so much it was impossible to get the license plate number.

Count me in for free door offers or anything else you need from an 85 parts car of mine.

I've done something similar although unarmed. When I was 13 I lived in Ca. where you cannot leave a bike outside of a store or it will be stolen. So I went into a 7-11 and kept my eye on my bike outside and sure enough, someone hopped on it and took off.
I ran out of the store and chased him as fast as I could run. When he went into a neighborhood I knocked on doors until I found his house. I got my bike back.

I admire you for having the courage to do that. Your town is now a little safer and a better place because of you.

Open carry is an interesting topic and now thanks to this http://jonathanturley.org/2010/06/28...icago-gun-law/ there is no doubt about whether the 2nd amendment actually applied to everyone.

Every state is different with their laws and rules and I think the castle doctrine is what should be in all 50 states.

Just about everyone has been great in this thread, but I would say it would be best in a situation like this to use a videophone first to capture all the evidence and only your gun as a last resort if your life/health is threatened.
