I'm pretty sure a guy in Europe has done it. I'm not sure on the particulars, but I think I remember it going into a racecar... Also not sure if it had been modified at all to work. (6speed)

I also heard it can be done...but when you talk to serious transmission guys they all say "why, the 928 box is stronger.." At least the couple I talked too said that..... The only exception is the uber rare 968 turbo 6 speed which is serious $$$$ if you can find one.....
Bottom line is the 928 box is fine unless you have more than 500hp-ftlbs and/or race on seriously grippy tires....

The 968 box is an audi box based design. Unlike the G31 or the 016/Z box found in the 931, and 79 924.
This means that it was originally intended for a FWD application, meaning the differential is at the front of the box.
While anything is possible, you will need to remove the battery box, and either build a custom fuel tank. Or you will need to go to a fuel cell.
To top that off, they are not built to withstand massive torque.

Haha, my girlfriend told me about that 928 for sale in the harbor. I think he wants big money for it...and I don't think my gf told me that it was a GT. If anyone's interested I can find out.
Yes, I have a white 928 (81), that I bought for 1500...long story, but it was an "estate sale". Runs like a champ! With the exception of the gearbox....I have to double clutch 2nd and 3rd gear. Drive it everyday, even in the winter(ski rack and studded snow tires!)

I've heard the differential placement is an issue.
The 968's half shaft come out of in the middle of the transaxle:

The 928's diff hangs off the back of the transaxle and so the half shafts come out more toward the rear:

Seems that axles would be swept back to the hub carriers using a 968 tranny in the 928, may be hard on the CV's?

I know someone from the German community who'd done such conversion with the 968 turbo box. It was a pretty hard conversion, because as Adam described above, you have to move the entire drive-train backwards. On the racer it was done so, and the engine sits now some cm deeper and the bulkhead had to be changed as well.
However, a buddy asked me that times for other options that could be used in a street legal car as well - without changing the structure of the entire body. He'd like to have a sequential gearbox with LSD similar to the 550 Maranello. I remember I've red something like that here several times ago...
Can anybody point me the thread or give me an idea?
Cheers

But you could spend a lot of time and money making it fit, so that you'd have a weaker gearbox when you were done.
