About 22 gallons. But not the same - I have watched George Suennen's videos and I can see why the average speeds are so relatively low what with the corners and all. Still, interesting. I have thought about it before.

So the sledgehammer corvette went 254.76mph with 898hp. The current record for a street legal car on normal gas is by the Veyron Super Sport @ 268.86mph I think:

http://www.autoblog.com/2010/07/04/b...ord-at-267-81/

What about a 928 beating that

Wow nice recovery!! And the Salt Gods where with you even thou Mother Nature was not. Amazing how using the shoot can straighten out the tail in a hurry. Curious how long did it take before your hands stopped shacking? I would definitely say you had a successful time at Bonneville.

When your running out of time, and you have crew members that have to get back to their jobs, it makes you do stupid things. :-)

Oddly, in open road racing, you often have to remain at full speed for 7-15 miles at a time, not an easy task and will test the engineering and reliability of any vehicle!

The sledgehammer vette, although in the record books, might not have made it to the finish in an open road race, as so many 800-900 hp cars failed to finish due to the need to keep the engine at high output for long stretches at a time...10-15 miles at full tilt. Plus, its fuel consumption may be a challenge in finishing the event, same for the Bugatti. To finish first, you must first finish!

There are only three records of global relevance: sledgehammer street record, a salt record (Carl is well on his way on this one) and the Buguatti record, the rest, as proud as we are, are records in our minds only.

Our 10 year old 928 top speed record of 210 mph is "only" a record for a "928" in open road racing, the top speed record for the event is 221mph set by R Doria, and top average is 207 or so - note: AVERAGE!!!

Carl is pushing his technology hard to achieve a record, and hopefully he will achieve the class record, 231 mph, I believe, in the near future. May the gods of speed be in your pit!

Bringing a salt car to an open road race and expecting a "record" is as unlikely as expecting an open road racer to be successful on the slat, and both would be utterly useless at Willow Springs!

Carl - be safe, be fast. In that order.

Damn. A surfer I used to hang with said 'the only way to get out of a dangerious situation is to put yourself there in the first place'. Nice recovery.

Marc,

I don't know how official it is yet, but check out the 2011 SSCC Prelim results:

http://sscc.us/results/2011%20SSCC%2...%20Results.pdf

216.8311 avg on highway 318, that's pretty fast, if it holds up.

Yeah, I'd like to see Carl's car run an ORR event at some point...

As Marc mentioned, it's a bit of a different game. Need some ability to turn, etc.
But it doesn't seem like you'd need to change that much about the car...

I think most of the extra ballast to weigh the car down consisted of Carl's gigantic brass *****. The problem is it is too far to the front.

WOW! Nice recovery somehow doesn't quite cover it. Did the car show any signs of wear or breakage after the spin out (at those speeds)? Way to keep cool and deploy the chute!
