911 values vs 928 amazes me

I get conflicted when I think about how unloved the 928 is by the enthusiast community at large. On the one hand, if it wasn't so unloved, I wouldn't have been able to buy a two supercars for less than the price of one used Kia. On the other hand, I get a bit of an inferiority complex about the car for that same reason--always trying to explain that yes, this was at one time the fastest car you could buy in the US, it was priced higher than the 911, etc. The irony is especially thick when you consider that if you looked at a list of the 10 overall highest performing cars(for sale in the us or worldwide) for any year from 1980 to 1990, a 928 was probably on that list, and for a number of years, it was probably in the top 5--yet a Delorean, which had a 0-60 measured by a calendar, goes for 30K.
I think I'm going to go into a Delorean forum and start talking smack, and ask them what it is like to own a car that combined Ferrari prices and mustang II peformance.

The other problem is that there are many 928's in very rough shape and people get the overall impression that they are extremely high maintenance and overly complicated. That last comment is true IMO but not too bad. However if you compare the 911 forums with the 928 forums you'll find that 911's have similar issues as the 928. Difference is that there are many experienced 911 mechanics and very few 928 mechanics. So the 928's continue to get hacked while the 911's are maintained to acceptable levels.

The 928 depreciation really stands out as an anomoly. It was probably the most technologically advanced production car on the planet when it was introduced. It has a level of craftmanship unseen in anything today short of the very low-volume supercars. And yet often sell for half the price of a nice 3.2 Carrera. I love 3.2 Carreras and would love to have one at some point, but the low price point on the 928s is amazing. No complaint from me as it allowed me to buy an 80s wondercar for the price of a used Kia (to quote John above).
Not that I'm looking to sell or move on, but I do think we are close to a turning point in the pricing structure as nice ones are getting harder and harder to find.

Dropped my GTS off at the local dealership this morning to have a ride height, corner balance and alignment done. As I got out of the car three guys not dealership personnel walked up and looked my GTS over exclaiming, "Wow, you just don't see 928s this nice any more, most look like junk." That seems to be the overall impression of the 928. Most of them look like junk.

Most 928 are in terrible condition. Most PO's and their mechanics didn't know how to fix them. Many 2nd and especially 3rd owners didn't have $$$$ to fix all small problems. Which then add up to catastrophic proportions and gets so expensive that there is no point in even trying to fix them.
911 is much simpler design to fix aqnd there are exponentially ore people who understand how to fix them. Many 30+ years old 911 have had couple of rebuilds already.

That's what I hear from most people that recognize the car as a 928...AND I am used to getting some kind of comment just about everywhere I stop and get out of the car.

Porsche had great difficulty selling them when they were new and nice and pretty.......should be no surprise that they are still not in demand ! To some extent the common descriptor GT ,Gran Tourer etc does not scream SPORTSCAR and for the most part sports cars/high performance often are the collectible cars.

I guess it is possible we might see a small bump in value as magazines compare a new front engine two door P-car to the venerable 928, but it will probably be short lived as the new car will have nothing in common w/ the 928, not even looks for the most part. It will look like either a cut down PanAm or a lengthened 911 and it will have a V8 up front... it will also cost about a ZILLION dollars...at least for the top model. If PAG is true to form it will have a V8 Turbo at the top priced to compete w/ the 599, a regular V8 priced just between a GT2 and a GT3, but more comfortable than both by miles yet well above the Turbo in price and then a bargain model V6 (probably hybrid!) that will barely out perform (if even) a Carrera S but will be more costly by $20k+... Just guessing here and compiling in my mind what we have seen in the past and what I have read about this proposed new 2 door front engine coupe...

Totally agree on this. I've been a Porsche fan my whole life but really only thought the 928 was a neat car. It wasn't until I bought it that I started reading all the R&D that went into it. Its nothing short of amazing what Porsche accomplished.

If Porsche comes out with any kind of two door front engine, they will be in direct competition with the Ford Mustang in the average consumer's mind and that is NO GT despite it's model designation.
I beat a hot rod Roush Mustang autocrossing yesterday. Couldn't beat the new 911 Turbo though. The course was very very big hp oriented, ie., not very technical with long straights.

I think the biggest problem with 928 prices is that the 911 owners bad mouth the hell out of this car. And I may be wrong, but most of the 911 owners that I know don't work on thier cars like we do. The owner of a well known independent Porsche repair shop here in Vegas lives 5 houses away from me. He knows nothing about the 928, and hates the car. Says it's a morphidite. I tell him to keep his 924, and 930 off the street, I don't need people thinking this is a seedy neighborhood.
The old 911's are just bugs with two more jugs. I had a 71, 911 T. I traded it for my Pantera. I still got the Pantera, and I'm keeping my Shark. Both are world class head turners. BTW, the 928 is alot more comfortable than the Pantera. I don't like the new Porsches, they just don't have the personality, or pazazz that the older cars had.
