Default 86.5 Project for sale, $3000

I'm offering my 86.5 auto transmission project car for sale at $3000. I've posted about the car a number of times previously. It was an opportunistic acquisition which I've always intended to sell. The previous owner had partially disassembled the car in preparation for some body work and an auto to manual conversion. I acquired the car and the parts with the intent of reassembling it and selling it. However, I have too many projects and am interested in selling it to someone looking for a project. I have begun the reassembly process and will continue down this path if it does not sell. The color is white gold metallic and the interior is brown.
Here's the good:
Runs and drives; although not registered
New rear brakes
LSD
New water pump and timing belt (I believe as the car came with the old waterpump and rollers and the belt looks new)
86.5
White gold metallic, a fairly rare color
78K miles
interior in pretty good shape (minus a few cracks in the dash and one in the pod)
930 steering wheel in good shape
16" 911 wheels with decent tires (plenty of tread, but not sure how old they are)

Here's the bad:

Dent in passenger rear quarter
Front bumper cover is currently off the car and must be painted.
Rub strips have been removed
Front fenders currently wire tied to the car
Entire car needs a compound and buff to remove clearcoat scratches.

That's the car in a nutshell, the best that I can describe it. I have not done a leak down test or measured the crank end play, but have no reason to suspect that there are issues.

My plan is to move forward with the reassembly and partial restoration; however, I'd rather be working on one of my other projects, so I'm offering it as is for $3000. This price is firm. I don't have to sell the car but I would like it to go to a good home and think that it would be good project car for someone. I previously posted that I was considering parting it and the overwhelming response was that I should sell it to preserve the species.

Well, I'm not surprised that my car hasn't overwhelmed the crowd here, so I'll use this thread to document my progress. My plan is to reassemble the car and still eventually sell it. So, to date, I've reinstalled the door panels as well as the center console. That includes the HVAC controller as well as the aftermarket stereo. I have confirmed that the window and sunroof controls work as well. The price for the car stands at $3000, but it will go up as I continue the reassembly/verification process.

-Gary

BTW. The pictures of the interior look much worse than the car actually appears. Once I get further along in the reassembly process, I'll clean the interior and take better pictures. It actually looks pretty good in person.

Sorry. Don't feel neglected. I, for one, simply missed reading your post.

Gary,
Great work! You are taking this car in the right direction. Now folks can see the parts are all there in where they belong.

No worries, I'm not feeling neglected I expect that the car will probably sell through Ebay or Craigslist rather than here, but it's still fun to document the process.

Put up a free classified ad here on Rennlist as well.

That car has a lot of potential and it's one of my favorite interior colors.

Default Another update

Well, I'm slowly making progress. The Alpine stereo is now connected and working. The antenna is not connected, but the CD player works fine. It looks like a PO installed a coax cable to the antenna, which the last owner partially removed. I'm going to leave this repair for the next owner. I've also taken a break from the reassembly process to do a little disassembly. I pulled the timing belt covers to get some pics of the belt and cam gears. The belt looks to be in good condition with no signs of wear. Both cam gears look perfect as well. No wear in the coating. The oil pump gear also looks perfect. In addition the contacts in the distributor caps look brand new with no wear. The same is true of the distributor rotors. I'm going to check the timing belt tension before reassembling these parts.

Here's a picture of the radio. Notice the HVAC ***** are missing. Depending on how far I get before selling the car, I may order a new set of ***** or may leave it to the next owner.

Here are pics of the distributor caps. They didn't photograph well as I had trouble getting my camera to focus, but I think you can tell that there is no wear.

Here are the rotors. These pics are also a little fuzzy, but the rotors look nearly new.

Passenger side cam gear:

Driver's side cam gear:

Oil pump gear:

Now for the not so good. These next pictures show the corrosion on the suspension parts. There is no rust on the body, no bubbles, nothing. The underbody looks good as well. However the suspension has a lot of surface corrosion.

thats too bad the car was parked possibly on grass or a dirt area outside for an extended period
new shocks and springs would be a good idea here

Yup, I agree. However, I think that most 32V 928s in this price range will be due for new shocks at least anyways (as well as most of the rubber suspension bits). I don't think that this car is any worse because of the corrosion. The challenge will be in dealing with the corrosion when removing parts. I'm guessing those rear pivot bolts, in particular, will be tough to get out.

BTW, for anyone who is attending the Boston area get together in September and might be interested in the car, I live about 20 minutes away from Milford and would be happy to bring you over to my house to show the car.

Also, I'm going to have the front bumper cover painted in 2-3 weeks. Once this is done, I'll be raising the price of the car.

Good to see a save in progress

Someone should snap this up - interior is in decent shape, which counts for a lot, and the rust on the suspension isn't actually as bad as it appears - most of the suspension is aluminum other than the sway bars and drop links, spring perches and rear lower control arms.

For the potential buyer:

1. $750 for some Bilsteins from 928srus's current sale includes new lower perches. Improved handling and gets rid of the rust.

2. The rear control arms are steel - I recently stripped mine, blasted them then sprayed with cold gal and re-painted (in silver, not factory black). They're likely saveable despite the rust, for not much more than the cost of media blasting, some paint, and some new bolts and lock nuts.

3. A used sway bar, some used front/rear eccentrics, and some used cone-washers for the rear suspension from 928intl, and the suspension is taken care of very nicely, other than buying a bunch of M10, M12 and M14 lock nuts.

The good condition of the cam gears etc. is all good news - that stuff usually pushes the cost of TBWP into the $1k+ even for a DIY'er. Looks like before it sat, it was being well taken care of.

Great side-step on the TB bits documentation. This car is really starting to look like a good entry level project for someone.
I'm definitely not seeing this car as overwhelming anymore, though a few questions remain.
Had you addressed the 5 speed conversion, meaning if any work was done to convert... has it been undone?
Is anything holding this car back from runnging and driving? The price you are aking is for a driver. Before moving too much further into cosmetics, I suggest you get this car running down the road.

The only part of the auto to manual conversion that the PO completed was to replace the automatic gas and brake pedal assembly with the manual gas, brake, and clutch pedal assembly. Nothing else was changed. I've already put the auto pedals back in. The car currently runs and drives. I've been very conservative with running it due to the unknown condition of the timing belt. However, once I've checked the tension, I'll drive the car more including some runs up and down my street. That will be it though as I won't be registering it to get plates.

Default Update 8/20

Just a short update for this week. I checked the tension which was at the high end of the window on the Kempf tool.

Tonight, I ran the car until it was up to temp, pulled the plugs, and checked the compression on each cylinder. Here are the results (based on an average of two tests per cylinder):

1: 183
2: 180
3: 173
4: 180
5: 185
6: 177
7: 170
8: 180
