Seems like a fine project and good value.
I think you are definitely doing the right thing here!
Solid compression numbers, so this sounds to be a solid 32V car
I simply can not buy now, but these would be my remaining questions, and if they checked-out, I'd be sending you money fast under normal circumstances:
Is the interior ok from an odor perspective?
Is there any significant corrosion at the jackpoints or body underside, other than the suspension corrosion shown?
Does the transmission shift upshift well? Any reverse lag?
Endplay figures?
Evidence of strong impact anywhere on the inner shell or fender mounts?
You clearly know the cars inside and out. Is it just the suspension corrosion that has you shaking your head on this one? This could be a great and fairly satisfying driveable project. I like it!

Just some quick thoughts regarding the underbody condition;
1. looks like the results of being driven on salted roads (calcium chloride)
2. this road salt can do a great deal of damage beyond the cosmetics
3. disassembly of road salted parts is problematic
4. between Indiana and New Hampshire I lived with road salt for nearly 50 years, working on cars from this environment is not fun
5. I have had brake lines corrode to failure in 5 years (new truck) when driven in this stuff
Not trying to disparage EspritS4s car, it is an absolute bargain even given the apparent underbody conditions, just felt it worth mentioning some issues that we don't see down south or out west to nearly the same degree.

I've pulled a pair of 928s out of MA. Both were also registered at one time in NH. Underbodies were perfectly fine. Some of the air vent emission lines needed replacing though. So as cars go looking back 50 years, these 928s were very, very well protected. Just need to check.

Landseer,
Thanks. I think that this car could make a good starter 928 for someone who is willing to get their hands dirty. I'm trying to answer the questions that an informed buyer would have before buying an '86 928 at this price so I appreciate these questions, even from people not in interested in purchasing the car. Regarding your questions:
1. The interior smells like a normal 928. No unusual odors. Other than the small cracks in the dash and the single crack in the pod, the interior really is in pretty good condition. My photos make the interior look unevenly faded and dirty, but that's due to my camera. It looks better in person. Once I'm done with the mechanicals, I'm going to try to take some pictures that more accurately capture the cosmetic condition.
2. I haven't found any significant corrosion on the body or undercarriage. I'll take pictures of the jackpoints and the rest of the undercarriage and post them.
3. As far as transmission shifting, I don't know yet as I haven't had the car up to speed. It shifts and drives fine in first and reverse, but that's all I've tested. this is on my list of things to check.
4. Endplay is also on my list of things to check. I've never actually checked this on any of my 928s, but this will be a good car for me to learn how to do the test.
5. I've been all over the front end looking for any signs of an accident and haven't found any. I'll take some pictures of this as well and post them.
Thanks!

Hi,
I've owned enough older cars from the North to understand your concerns, but I haven't found anything significant yet other than the suspension pictures that I posted. I do agree with your third point though and consider the future dissassebly of the suspension to be the biggest negative of the car. I've never seen a car of this age and mileage, with original suspension parts, that couldn't use new shocks and various other rubber parts. On this car, those jobs will likely require liberal soaking and heat. Of course, many of these cars at this age continue to be driven long after the suspension is worn out so this would be up to the next owner.

Its easy enough to pull the the front and rear suspensions off these things to make access easier. All the next owner needs are jackstands and a floor jack and a handful of sockets.
Kudos for pointing the car in a good direction.
Like Stan Shaw said, he felt certain that the one in my avatar was destined to be a parts car, too far neglected. It requires more finish work, but mechanically its become very reliable. I think my daughter is taking it back to college soon and will need to run it on the interstate everyday.

Another update on how not to sell a car:;
So tonight, I checked the crank end play. It appears to be well within spec. I started with releasing the flexplate clamp (after taking pictures of the level on the flex plate to look for any bowing). It did not move at all. I was lucky that a PO replaced the rear cover bolts with shorter versions so that I could remove the cover without dropping the exhaust. The pictures below show the bowing of the flex plate (almost no bowing). When I loosened the 8mm bolt on the drive shaft, I didn't see any movement. The pictures of the flexplate under my magnetic level also reflect this (taken before loosening the bolt). The end play measured at about .23mm (.009") which is within spec (WSM states new endplay is between 0.11mm and 0.31mm with a wear limit of 0.4mm). (edit: Sorry, I left a zero out of this measurement previously). Pics below:

The car is up on Ebay now:

I was going to wait until it is completely back together before listing it on Ebay, but decided to throw it up there, as is, to see if anyone is interested.

I could buy it at the asking price and sit on it, if someone really wants it down the road. I already have too many ongoing projects (and lack motivation on some of those ) so it would just sit.
So if either Chris wants me to store it for them, just let me know (and understand my wife won't ever be your friend )

What an offer! I'd be happy to end the auction early, for a Rennlister, at $3K

Gary,
If you still have this car, do yourself a favor and PUT IT ON EBAY!
I had a car for sale and had people tell me it wasnt worth 5 cents
It sold on ebay in 3 days for what I wanted
Do yourself a favor and try sources other than rennlist.
Cheerio
EDIT: I see its on ebay, best of luck, i trust you wont have to ***** yourself out to sell it on there like you would on here. Heres to a quick and painless sell and a happy new owner.

Ryan,
I hear what your saying. It's been my plan all along to go the Ebay and Autotrader route eventually. I'm just using this thread to document what work I do on the car and get the word out in case someone here might be interested. Probably the same reason you advertised your '85 on here before selling it on Ebay.

That is REALLY awesome of you Stan to throw such a great proposal out there. I have watched this tread for a while and considered getting it as a driver while I work on making my 5-speed into more of a track car. But... it really can't happen for me any time soon. just found out a couple weeks ago the wife is pregnant, and money is still tight and tied up in the small businesses so I wouldn't take advantage of that in good conscious since its unlikely I'm gonna have room for another project any time soon. Hell, I'll be lucky if I can keep the one 928 at this rate, harder and harder to justify. When Gary first posted this before I knew what I know now I was reaaal temped though. Thanks Stan and Gary, you guys rock!
