One of my neighbors gets a new SUV every two to three years, Cheyenne, Turbo, whatever the MB SUV is, swaps back and forth. Nobody I know of spends that kind of money on a 928. For what you get nothing comes close to a 928 at twice the price.

It is with out a doubt a money losing proposition to restore a classic car unless YOU do most if not all the work and you consider you time free....that being said to MOST people buying a restored car is hard to do because the initial investment is so much more expensive than buying a project and pay as you go.....all in all IMHO its still cheaper than buying a NEW car at say the example below.
NEW CAR ..........................$30000
Finance interest....................$7000
5 year old value of car.........$12000
Total LOSS in 5 years.........-$25000...in 5 YEARS!!!
...keep the car another 5 years ( with maintenance required but not covered by a warranty anymore ) and loss is more like $30,000...thats almost your entire payout...GONE.
And lets face it...$30000 today for a new car will not buy much. Then this process of setting fire to one's hard earned money...starts all over again.
A nice restored car will not lose much valve because of miles as long as the car is maintained like a restored car should be. In other words the depreciation is just not there.

Depreciation= over $100k in 4 years, plus cost of
maint. etc. - makes a 928 look like a bargain.

If you do your own work, a 928 can be a wonderful "daily driver" for very little money (unless you are unlucky enough to bend valves, eat a thrust bearing, etc.).
There is no such thing as a "cheap, restored" 928. One of the main reasons is that most owners can't stop at restoration - they must have $3500 worth of 19" wheels/tires, $2000 worth of audio gear, etc.

I'm going to list the prices of the pieces we use in the Two Valve" thread. We will see what it takes.

If you devide the cost of new parts by its weight and multiply that value/weight number times the weight of the total car than you end up with a car that costs approx US$ 1M. So any 928 is well worth the costs of its repair!!

We've got 5 of them registered here. One is on the rack for service after 2 years of DD work, but the other four I'd drive about anywhere. The expenditure is low. Am using economies of scale regarding learning / all 5 are the same body style. 2 are 16V USA, 2 are 32V USA and the 5th is a kind of hybrid--- 16V LH.

I now have $20K in receipts for a $5K 83S. I have used it for a daily driver for the last few months.(at least for another couple weeks). I have put 30K miles on it in the last two years. No major issues, just normal maintenance.
What else could I possibly buy for $20K that is as cool and unique as this car? It is very comfortable on long rides, Runs strong, get lots of looks, people always stop and ask what it is.
I consider my $20K money well spent.
No point in trying to justify the money. I wont ever sell the car expecting a return. I will enjoy it till I cant anymore, then pass it on to my son so he can enjoy it also.
