Every V12 Jag ever made is on fire, some just have not started smoking yet, I have had 2 catch on fire in my shop.

A great luxury car when right, but they seldom are and when they are they seldom stay that way for long.

It is rare to see one with rod bearings in them at 100,000 miles from what I have seen.

Beautiful car the jag. That is one car that I would have no problem putting in a Chevy 383!

Almost bought my neighbors 73 for 500 bucks, it was a XJ6. Interior was in great condition for it's age. Needed paint. Thought I would buy the conversion kit and a bunch of american muscle. Had my mind set on finding a 928 but I almost pulled the trigger.

A bunch have been done, far cheaper to just guy another XJS that runs.
Maybe some are right and work well, but I have yet to see one that I would call right.

If you want a car to do a transplant in, get a old Volvo 245 DL Diesel and drop a hot, big cube SBC in, go out and spank the kids in the Mustang GT's, loads of fun and cheap.
BTDT, they look over at grandpa in the station wagon and go WTF?????????????????

A blue bottle, a Ford nine inch and some big tires in the back dont hurt either.

Really, really, ugly, but they handle better than you would think, stop well and go like stink.

Bad example would be a 90% perfect 928, except the 10% bad is spread over everything, so everything is pretty good, just not perfect or good enough and ends up getting replaced.

Yes, very bad. Send them to me.

So that for a total cost of sub $6K I'm ripping through the countryside.

If I want a "fix" of perfect, I'll go see one in a museum.

Yes you can read countless threads about project cars that went south and if your saying those should have been recognized as "bad examples" and immedialtely hualed off to the junk yard without trying then I have to object. Should the person buying the "bad example" know the challenges and potential costs, Yes!

My point about the term "bad example" is that it is very subjective. If there were a million of these still on the road we could all be more judgemental. If every bad example (what ever that means) went to the junk yard then 928's would be very rare indeed. If I remember correctly there is a "great saves" thread. Many of those were probably deemed "bad examples" and yet were able to be saved (at a cost for sure but liklely a acceptable one for the saver)!

Now if there are rules about what makes a 928 a good example versus a bad example please share them with me because I don't want to be in violation once I get my bad example running

There is a blue V12 jag still puttering around down the road from me. I always see the guy at the gas station

When is Jim Bailey going to spend some money on the very brown 1980? That car needs some re$$$$$toration!!!!
He can't just sit there forever telling us how dumb we are with our meticulously restored 928s while he ignores the needs of the brown turd...

Those contributing to saving cars have the long-view, in my opinion.
There is room for all levels, from lemons-racers to drivers to showpieces.
I've never had so much satisfaction in a hobby.

My red 84, the one Stan Shaw rescued and I completed, is so strong and clean now. I love that car. People blew it off when he advertised it here. Its my favorite. And there is nowhere near $6K in that one.

The old very brown 1980 is really only used as a track car and I get great pleasure out of driving a P O S fade out turd and doing lap times faster than many of the "real" Porsche cars. Many of them have more money in their wheels than I have in my car ! One GT3 driver who rode with me simply stated "that car defies the laws of physics " . If it LOOKED nice some might expect it to be fast.....when I had the Turbo sticker on the rear bumper some would comment on it being a Turbo....I guess they saw the rear bumper I figure if I painted it then 2/6 rod bearings would probably let go. Besides guys I am unemployed and more than anything else need some new "race" tires. Most who know me realize I really do not care much about what other people think ! I seem to be getting type cast now as a homeless person .....last four gigs.

Jim,

I stand corrected there are no bad examples of 928's, and all cars should be saved no matter the costs. Obviously, there are no good examples (what ever that means?) of 928's as that is totally subjective. Got It!

Back when I was thinking about getting mine, I had a choice - get a sail boat(always wanted to learn to sail) or this car. Figured that the best two days of a boat owners life were on the day they bought it, and the day they sold it! Besides, I can enjoy my 928 everyday, whereas the boat only on the weekends and summer. Shure I've spent way more than I thought I everwould on her, and much more to come, but It dosn't hurt nearly as bad now that she runs great, just taking care of the little things that come along, plus getting into getting her looking as good as she can at the time. Upgrades can come later. And I don't care what anyone else say's- I like my 15" polished phone dials! As far as total cost into the car? Have no clue, don't keep the reciepts- don't plan on selling and too scared to look;-)
