okay "Cars" are well known money pits.....very few actually appreciate in value...but look at it this way...lets say you have a decent $10k 928 and spend another $20k on it to make it exactly what you want......its perfect in your eyes.....lets say you do very well in 5 years and sell it for $15k.... so you lost $15k in 5 years...oh well you drove a great 928 for a long time.....I lost more than $15k in my M3 when it drove off the lot!!!!

I think in the long run these cars will come into thier own, and increase in value. Maybe not like a Ferrari, but I believe that they will start to increase like my Pantera has. The Pantera is worth about 3 times what it cost new. Mine could on a good day with the right buyer fetch around $75,000.00. Thats about half of what I've spent on it over the past 36 years. In that same time frame I've had to replace 8 new cars for the wife. She's hard on cars, and I've learned that when the warranty is close to running out it's time to see the auto broker.
But the bottom line is I've had fun with my cars and bikes. And there are some things in life that you can't put a dollar value on like enjoyment. As far as I know, I ain't taking anything with me when I'm dead. And anybody left behind in my family is on thier own. They can make thier own way in life, just like we all have. Just my 2 cents.

Slowly but surely fix and restore it to the level you want and then enjoy it forever.

A top notch 928 is better than anything else on the road (in standard production) imo and you would need to spend 6 figures to get anything close to a 928 in all categories. A V8V is 130K and does not have the presence of a nice 928. (see khaled)

I personally find the 928 shape timeless and near perfect, add in wheels, new paint if needed, new interior if desired, kuhn, murf, ggray, or stroker engine power, brake and suspension upgrades and what more do you want.

Most other approaches are usually a bad thread waiting to happen.

Well said!

When they put me in the ground, I am taking my keys with me, just in case.

I haven't seen the prices on the three boxes for my son's car, but he's pretty much doing everything but the transmission, so we should get a pretty good idea.

I'm betting that Big Jim's idea of being $10,000 away from a $5,000 car might not be enough...but don't tell his mom.

Oh crap, she's the one that has the prices!

We both know ten grand is not going to cover the parts, at least it has not on mine.

And any time you are working on one of your own cars and have work sitting in the lot, it is just like you are paying yourself for the labor, cause you are not getting paid on things that other folks would pay you for.

On the plus side, this will be something the Kyle will remember long after you and Mary are gone.
You are doing good.

I'm not in it for resale value, couldn't care less. It's the process of bringing an amazing machine back to life with parts, sweat-equity, and a few good books. lol Then, you get to drive this beast among ****-ant crap that costs 3x new, total loss in 5 years, can't get out of it's own way. Shark swimming in a school of tuna. For less than 10k. And they run forever it seems, I've got 300k on my black beast, runs like a mashed cat. Besides, to keep them perfect you have to park them. And where's the fun in that?

I lost track of the thousands spent. My wife just smiles when I put in more money in the 928. Luckily she loves the car..... However, I would not restore a bad example that's INSANE

I am always shocked by what most call "Restored", many would be lucky to get to the state line and back with out having something not work or need a roll back.

Comparing bottom line of my 928s and mutual fund investments over the past 2 years... only one has given me pleasure.

Maybe refreshing them is the better descriptor.

The only car that really cost me too much was a 928 that was completely thrashed and needed all suspension, clutch, exhaust and brake wear parts replaced. Bad interior, bad paint. Learned my lesson. That said, its still given me incredible fun driving. It always starts and runs strong. Its getting a steering u-joint and a transmission fork right now, to the tune of about $400, and $200 worth of perfect S4 seats, but soon will be back.

You bring up a great point. We all have very different opinions/descriptions for a cars condition.
