"Proper" 2+2 V8 GT's?

Ones I'd consider as a substitute for a 928 are all more modern..

Maserati GranSport
Merc CLK55
Jag XKR

Anything with 12 cylinders is in a whole other league of maintenance (DB7, DB9, 456 etc.)

Yeah, not fair to compare different vintages, the Aston comparisons don't work. I like the BMW 6 series for 78-86 models and 8 series for 87-95 models. You've got engineering, style, 2+2, performance and a certain amount of exclusivity. I even considered getting a 6 series instead of a 928 when I started my search.

My 94 Autocar mag consider these cars to be in the same ballpark as a 928 GTS

Ferrari 456
Aston Martin Vantage 550
Bentley Continetal R
BMW 850 CSi
Mercedes 600 CL

modern day alternatives I would consider

Ferrari 612
Aston Martin DB9
Bentley Continetal
BMW M6
Mercedes 63 CL
Maserati GranTurismo
Jaguar XKR

Hmm... after much consideration, 2+2 V8 Transaxle Coupe, I was contemplating the Maserati Gran Sport, but it appears to have a boot (trunk) rather than a hatch, and the hatch and tilt forward rear seats in the 928 frees up a lot of usfull space. I'm afraid I find there is...

NO SUBSTITUTE

968 w/ chevy LS2 and 968 Turbo S transmission and GTS brakes.

like a 928, but, faster, lighter, and stuck to the tarmac w/ the help of those heavy, GTS brakes.

The 928 is so unique. This exercise makes me realize that. Closest I've seen is the Infiniti G37 coupe (330 HP/270 ft. lbs, 3.9 liter DOHC engine, 0-60 in 5.0 (!) and it's on the right side of $40,000.

Acura NSX has got the interior nailed.

BMW 850 has similar seating and weight.

Toyota Supra has the motor.

None combine them all like the 928.

THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE.

I'd imagine a Panamera would be a pleasant drive if the 928 didn't exist....

When I was looking for my 928, I looked at all the other cars in the same price range, that had similar looks, handling, power, etc.

Which were the Nissan 300Z, and the Toyota Supra.

Obviously I decided the 928 was a better option...

It seems silly to compare it to new, $60k+ cars.
Yes, the handling and performance are similar, but new cars have much nicer
interiors, electronics, no leaks, no breakdowns, etc. I prefer to compare cars
I could actually afford, and who seem to be similar in terms of power and
performance....

One of the main reasons I picked the 928 is the fact that the car looked good
without needing a body kit, etc. Whereas the Z and the Supra need a lot of
modifications to make them look slick and nice. The 928 looks great even stock.

My first impression test driving the Cayenne S when it first came out was that it felt like a 928 only I was higher off the ground.
