Mercedes sports car with V8, usable rear seats and factory hardtop ( I don't know what they are called / 420SLC maybe?)

In fact, I might switch to rescuing those for a while.

The 928 was in a class of its own. There was really no competitor. However, the closest thing, IMHO, was the Jaguar XJ-S. In 1983, I would love to have a 928s but it was totally out of my reach. I bought a 1976 XJS as the next best thing I could afford then. It was $11k.

I was going to say supra too. I had an 87, 90 and 90 turbo. The last model Supras were very similar to the 928. 320 hp, usable rear seats, very unique styling that many companies copied. They had smaller gears and quicker acceleration, but the top speed was limited to 155 electronicaly. They also did not sell well at the dealership, but now have a huge cult following.

In fact, I think the Supra may have copying the 928 a little, in the late 80's. the 928 changed the front end in 87 to look more modern and the Supra made a really similar change in 89.

Indeed the Supra seems to be more capable than our beloved 928!

Can't believe no one has suggested the obvious. A car even designed by the same designer.

AMC Pacer.

Perfect ringer for the 928!

You guys have a sense of humor right?

I know, I was asking for that. Just couldn't resist the temptation!

Closest car a like to replace the 928 with:
Currenlty: a 2003 Boxster S 6 speed
In 1-2 years: a 05-07 997 S 6 speed or a 02-04 996TT 6 speed with the x-50 option
In 2-4 years: a 07-09 997TT 6 speed with the Sport Chrono package
