If not a 928, what's the closest car like it?

Mercedes sports car with V8, usable rear seats and factory hardtop ( I don't know what they are called / 420SLC maybe?)
In fact, I might switch to rescuing those for a while.

well i can't compare to other european and higher end rice burners, but i have a buick grand national, have owned a corvette z06. neither of which my wife could care two straws for. but when she looks at the 928, she thinks it's unique, beautiful, comfortable, and willing to ride with me in. that my friends is priceless.

The 928 was in a class of its own. There was really no competitor. However, the closest thing, IMHO, was the Jaguar XJ-S. In 1983, I would love to have a 928s but it was totally out of my reach. I bought a 1976 XJS as the next best thing I could afford then. It was $11k.

In fact, I think the Supra may have copying the 928 a little, in the late 80's. the 928 changed the front end in 87 to look more modern and the Supra made a really similar change in 89.

Can't believe no one has suggested the obvious. A car even designed by the same designer.
AMC Pacer.
Perfect ringer for the 928!![ducking](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/icon107.gif)

Closest car a like to replace the 928 with:
Currenlty: a 2003 Boxster S 6 speed
In 1-2 years: a 05-07 997 S 6 speed or a 02-04 996TT 6 speed with the x-50 option
In 2-4 years: a 07-09 997TT 6 speed with the Sport Chrono package
