Radically re-designed console (Carputer, Climate, and one-touch windows)

Hans, I never cease to be amazed at how you do this stuff and to what your commitment has been to improving the lot of the 928 community. Having said that, I just want to clarify what I understand to be the capabilities with this unit: A) This unit will ultimately interface with the the "Big Kahuna" video computer thingy. 2) This (essentially) plug & play unit will fit in the same face space of the current AC controls but will not utilize nearly as much depth behind it. C) That the AC on/off button on the alarm/lock switch area is now integrated into this panel. 4) That the"lock" button could be integrated into one of the two extra buttons on the new panel. D) That the aforesaid AC/Lock panel could then be eliminated as it has no other function. Please correct me if I am wrong.....I know you will anyhow.
Everything has been streamlined. There will only be one type of climate system. It however can be physically configured in a couple different ways, including the ability to separate the control board from the faceplate for custom installations. There are extra button positions on the climate, which I have not fixed their use to any specific function. They certainly could become the lock button or the exciter button, but they you would have to fabricate a part to replace that existing panel. That is why there is some flexibility. This will drop in to replace a factory head as a direct replacement, but can also be used to delete that lock panel for installation of a larger headunit, or ultimately, the carputer.
The climate controller does have a USB port, and is capable of bi-directional communication with the carputer. Thus, in the future, it will be possible to offer advanced controls of the climate.
Hope that kind of clears things up.

Yeah, I think you answered all my questions and although I'm old, the thought of a new "exciter" button and ***** does sorta appeal to me. In all seriousness, I'm considering eliminating that small "AC on" panel, removing the clock and rear AC control section from the tranny shift insert (your new panel now controls the rear air too, doesn't it?) dropping your unit lower and putting in a new double DIN head unit in the remaining space. Am I still in the game for those ideas?

Paul,
The rear AC is a completely different system. If you want to control it from the new headunit, it will be possible through the expansion port, but not a native feature. What will be supported is a on/off function where the rear AC will automatically turn on to its coldest setting and highest fan-speed when the desired temperature is set to the closed loop "max cool" position. It is a defeatable option with one of the push-buttons.
Otherwise, we would have to get into nesting menus in order to change the fanspeed and temperature of the rear unit, which I dont want to do, and it will require another discrete pot. We will include a relocation harness to move these controls to the driver-side hatch release cover.
Thanks,
Hans

Attached is an example next to the hatch **** for comparison purposes - I think they would be about right.

I think there might still be a bit of confusion about this particular project, due to the fact that we are now at the intersection of 2 different projects.
So, maybe this might help clarify:
The AC controller Hans just showed, can and will be used as a standalone unit, with the face I posted earlier. This will be a replacement for the factory AC controller.
The same unit can and will be used with our complete console re-design, with the carputer. It is the same AC controller, mounted under our full console inserts, with a fully integrated, seamless face.
I will try and get a mock up picture up to show the look when integrated to the full system.

Thanks for the clarification Paul and Hans..
I too was hoping the OOB (Out Of the Box) unit would also replace the need for the OEM AC pushbuttong switch and hopefully at least have instructions for non EE types to have a button on the new HVAC unit take the place of the door lock button as well.

This has already been mentioned before but maybe forgotten. IMO the best ***** to use for this are out of a 951/968. They are the perfect size, are designed for this exact purpose, they look good and fit in the 928 well. The icons for some of the other buttons are really nice too.

We will however be able to match the top of the ***** to the face, or add a texture for those who prefer.

This may be a silly question and asked before .. the display unit currently displays Farenheit. Is this switchable to Celcius, for us living in the land of the Metric lord?

I stopped at 928Intl today and picked up a Euro stereo fader ****. Micing the D-shaped hole for the shaft, the max ID I get is about 0.232X", so hopefully that means that the pliable rubber is designed to splay out a bit to fit over a 0.25" shaft. It's almost exactly 1" in diameter and just under 1/2" thick- figure 25 mm x 12 mm tall if they were made in a metric mold.
Hans, holler if you'd like one to play with and I'll toss it in the mail. I will let you figure out what solvents remove the speaker icon non-destructively.

I will take a look. No promises though. You say that the attachment/bushing is rubber and "stretchy"? That is intersting. Normally the center is rigid, and there is a spring clip in there that applies pressure and keeps the **** on. Having an elastic core is a new one for me.
Thanks
